Monday Morning Stretch: Help Them Connect the Dots They say there are two ways to motivate people: away from fear or toward desire. Fear could include losing a job, being embarrassed at the team meeting, or being passed over for a promotion. Desire could include getting a bonus or some other desirable incentive, receiving recognition, or earning a promotion. Many of us hope to lead by creating desire rather than fear in our people, but many leaders tell me they feel unable to create desire in their employees. I contend that we must find ways to tie what we want from our employees with what they want for themselves. Humans are essentially selfish beings, and I don’t necessarily mean that in a derogatory way. We are simply wired to scan a request of us for “what’s in it for me?” When someone asks us to do something different than what we are currently doing, they are asking us to change, and change isn’t easy. So, unless we can help the person of whom we are requesting the change to believe their compliance will result in helping them get something they want, they will likely resist it. Monday Morning Stretch: Inspirational Speakers In the past when I’ve coached business owners, managers, and even speakers to become more inspirational for their teams and audiences, I’ve heard things like, “Katherine, I’m no Tony Robbins!” or “I’m not like you, Katherine. I’m not interested in becoming a motivational speaker” or “My team doesn’t need the rah-rah speech.” And I always vehemently disagree. I don’t consider myself a motivational speaker, but I certainly do hope that my presentations inspire and motivate people to take action to achieve their goals and make achieving those goals easier. As a leader of a company and a team, they don’t need a “rah-rah” speech, but I certainly do want them to be inspired about what we’re doing and have the capacity to do for our clients. I'm in Charlotte for a few days for the DEW (Dental Entrepreneur Women) conference which started last night with a showing of the documentary film, Women Shaping Dentistry Tomorrow, followed by a panel discussion of the contributors and pajama party. Very inspiring to be with over 150 women in dentistry from every walk of life sharing, supporting, and growing together.

Monday Morning Stretch: Supervision vs. Coaching Supervision is an old, industrial-age, baby boomer model of leadership that is DOA in the workplace today. I can say that because I AM a boomer. I can also say it because I work with Gen X, Y, and Z professionals every day who confirm what the research overwhelmingly supports—they hate being supervised, corrected, and micromanaged. Supervision was important and effective back when managers were in charge of production plants and assembly lines. They needed to constantly scan the work environment for mistakes, things being done too slowly, sloppy outputs, or broken mechanisms. When they spotted these things, their job was to fix it quickly, typically by correcting the employee. Too many of these mistakes on an employee’s record, and he or she was demoted, reassigned, or fired. But today, we aren’t managing a mechanical business environment; we’re trying to manage how people think, create, engage, and problem solve. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gNKdHTwV
