Where does Linus Health Chief Strategy Officer Dr. John Showalter see an overlooked opportunity in healthcare? Integrating technology and AI to proactively address brain health, an area he believes is largely neglected in current healthcare strategies. While conditions like heart disease and kidney failure receive significant attention, Dr. Showalter argues that cognitive health is often an afterthought, despite its critical impact on overall well-being. By leveraging AI and digital tools, healthcare can better detect, monitor, and support those with mild cognitive impairment and mood disorders.
AI in healthcare is overhyped—but also here to stay. John Showalter of Linus Health shares where AI truly adds value at #HIMSS25. Also, watch his take on brain health! ??

The HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition is less than a week away, and the spotlight is shining on AI. From automating administrative tasks to revolutionizing diagnostics and treatment, AI is set to reshape the healthcare landscape in 2025. HIT Consultant Media spoke with leading healthcare executives and innovators, including Linus Health’s Sean Tobyne, PhD, VP of Data Science and Analytics, to offer a glimpse into the key trends and discussions expected to dominate HIMSS25. “The intersection of health tech and brain health will be a hot topic,” Dr. Tobyne predicts. “AI is helping drive progress in the fight against Alzheimer’s and other dementias. AI-enabled digital tools are making it easier for primary care physicians to detect mild cognitive impairment–a precursor to dementia–earlier to direct these patients towards existing and emerging disease modifying therapies. Personalized treatment plans that leverage large language models and generative AI will allow patients to act to potentially delay the progression of the disease.” Are there any trends you expect to see at this year’s show? A new Nature Portfolio study reveals that approximately 42% of individuals may develop dementia after age 55, with lifetime risks higher for Black individuals, women, and those with certain genetic markers. The findings underscore the need for targeted public health strategies focused on prevention—particularly through cardiovascular health and hearing preservation—as well as the importance of early detection, which plays a crucial role in managing and mitigating dementia risks. With dementia cases expected to double by 2060, public health policies must prioritize lifestyle interventions and address structural inequalities that contribute to higher risks in minority populations. https://lnkd.in/g73FyTmV I #AlzheimersDisease #Dementia #BrainHealth #Prevention #DementiaResearch #HealthEquity

Is it possible for family caregivers to clearly communicate with a loved one with dementia? While communication strategies vary by disease stage and other factors, Linus Health Chief Strategy Officer Dr. John Showalter and other brain health experts shared their insights with AARP on how to effectively converse with loved ones with dementia: “Meeting a person with dementia ‘in their world’ is acceptable to have a positive interaction as long as everyone is safe. If the hallucinations lead to aggression … get assistance from family, staff in a facility, or even paramedics. Do not argue about the reality of a hallucination with a loved one if it makes them more agitated.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gn9yi3uX #Dementia #AlzheimersDisease #BrainHealth #MildCognitiveImpairment
