On February 17, 2025, the U.S. Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Texas issued a stay of the Court’s January 7, 2025, order that had granted relief of enforcement of the Corporate Transparency Act and its implementing regulation, the beneficial ownership information reporting rule. The decision effectively reinstates reporting companies’ obligations to file beneficial ownership information reports under the CTA. In responding to the decision and acknowledging the need for additional time to comply with reporting obligations, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network extended the deadline to comply with the CTA reporting requirements 30 days from February 19, 2025. The United States Copyright Office has released its latest report on the copyrightability of outputs generated by artificial intelligence systems. This report is the second in a three-part series examining legal and policy issues related to AI and copyright law and aims to clarify the extent of human contribution required for copyright protection of AI-generated outputs. The first report, published in July 2024, discussed whether current legal frameworks adequately protect against the unauthorized distribution of digital replicas. The third part, expected later this year, will address the legal implications of training AI models on copyrighted works and licensing considerations. A U.S.-German Linklaters team is advising BASF on the $1.15 billion sale of its Brazilian decorative paints business to Sherwin-Williams. The transaction involves a carve-out of the business, and includes, among other things, the production sites in Demarchi and Jaboat?o, the Suvinil and Glasu! brands, and approximately 1,000 employees.
