LINK Houston advocates for a robust and equitable transportation network so that all people can reach opportunity.

关于我们

Transportation– how we get where we need to go – should not be a barrier to accessing jobs, education, healthcare, shopping, or anything else we need in our lives. People should be able to reach such opportunities safely and with dignity by walking, rolling, biking, and riding transit. These deeply affordable options must be as viable as owning a personal vehicle.

Transportation accounts for nearly half of Houston's greenhouse gas emissions - an area where everything's bigger in Texas isn't a positive. Every person riding METRO is one less car on the road contributing to climate change.

Happy Rodeo y'all! If you plan on going to the Rodeo this year save yourself the misery of high costs and long lines to park by using public transit! If you're a seasoned pro or if this is your very first trip the METRORail is the easiest way to get to NRG. Hop on for $1.25 and ride until the Stadium/Astrodome station. There are also 3 local bus routes that stop close to the festival grounds. You can ride the 14 Hiram Clarke, 60 Cambridge or 84 Buffalo Speedway. We're looking forward to seeing denim and boots fill the stations all month long! For more information on how to use METRO services visit: https://lnkd.in/gcH_NC3j

Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County leadership unveiled more details on their METRONow plan at a press conference yesterday. This rebrand from METRONext emphasizes safety, cleanliness, reliability, and accessibility—key concerns raised by bus riders in our Equity in Transit reports. As this plan moves forward, we look forward to ensuring that implementation prioritizes riders and improves mobility for all Houstonians. Known as “The Bus Lady”, the late Ms. Janis Scott was a passionate advocate for public transit in Houston. Ms. Janis was also a founding board member here at LINK Houston where she instilled the values of transit justice into our ethos. She strongly believed and advocated fiercely for a public transit system in Houston that would allow riders access to opportunities including jobs, doctors, education and what she called ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’ Ms. Janis was one of Rice University’s first Black graduates and often spent her free time riding the bus back to campus to attend concerts, lectures and mentor students. When not at her alma mater you could find her at METRO board meetings where she would detail her experiences as a regular bus rider so that the leadership would have firsthand knowledge of the impacts of their decisions. We will miss her guidance, knowledge, smile and support. You can read more about Ms. Janis: https://lnkd.in/gs6g39XG https://lnkd.in/grR-bGqH

Did you know the City could abandon a street? The City of Houston in partnership with Houston First to cede ownership of the segment of Polk St. between Chartres and Avenida De Las Americas. This is a crucial pathway connecting the East End to Downtown Houston for all road users. It is one of only a few connections between the two, the only one with a high comfort bike lane and services multiple bus routes.?Drivers, pedestrians, transit users and especially bikers will be directly affected by this proposed change. Does this affect your commute? Call the City of Houston at 832-395-3122 to register your comment. You can also call your council member and ask them to take a stand on this proposal. We celebrate Transit Equity Day because we believe in the dignity of bus and rail riders. We believe that Houstonians should have access to safe, accessible, frequent and affordable public transit that allows them the ability to move around. 1.3 million people in the Houston region live in an area with a high demand for affordable transportation options - a clear indicator that serious investments need to be made for METRO to succeed.

“While enforcement, such as targeting DWIs, plays an important role, it cannot stand alone,” said Peter Eccles, director of policy and planning for the advocacy group LINK Houston. “Infrastructure improvements – like 10- or 11-foot lanes proven to reduce speeding and crashes – are critical to protecting lives 24-7. Safe street design is a lasting safeguard that Houston urgently needs to embrace.” https://lnkd.in/ghdmEWpD

Sidewalks are the foundation for moving through your city. You should be able to walk from your home to your bus stop, grocery store, doctor, or school safely on a paved, accessible sidewalk. Houston's sidewalk network is broken and incomplete and it's time to let our representatives know. We deserve the ability to walk around our city with dignity. Read more about Houston's crumbling sidewalk network on our website: https://lnkd.in/giiSpZ_c
