We're back again with content from LCL24 and Alexandra Johnston, Ph.D. for this week's Linguistics Careercast! Informational interviewing is the key way to learn about jobs of interest, what jobs might be a good fit (or not!), and finding out “what’s out there” beyond the information available on the internet. It’s an effective research tool, but it’s important to do it right. Tune in to Alex to learn how to use your research skills in service of your own job search! She'll cover: - what an informational interview is - who to contact - how to contact them - which questions to ask - and how to maintain the connections you’ve made for the long term. It's time for our second of five videos on career management that Alexandra Johnston, Ph.D. presented during LCL24! Have you ever asked yourself any of these questions? How do I “convert” my academic, student or volunteer experiences into a professional resume? What experience do I even HAVE? (More than you think!) How do I showcase those experiences on my resume so it has a better chance of passing through the Applicant Tracking System and getting in front of a real person? How can my resume convince a real person that I’m a fit for the job? After this talk, you’ll understand STAR stories, effective resume bullet points, and ways to research and display “fit” with a job announcement. We recently had a discussion about microcredentials for linguists and other social scientists. The main question was whether it would be possible to create microcredentials from the social sciences, similar to what already exists for STEM fields. The audience for these would be (1) linguists, anthropologists, etc. already working beyond academia who want to extend their skills in those fields; and (2) STEM folks looks to diversify their skillset. We had a lot of ideas about what would(n't) work, but we'd love to hear your thoughts too! This is an ongoing conversation that we're having with some of our partners in professional, practicing and applied (PPA) anthropology.

A couple of weeks ago, Laurel Sutton interviewed Brendan Regan and Andrea Berez-Kroeker about how they use LCL materials in the classroom, and how faculty can best support alt-ac job searches. Dr. Regan provided some great tips in his post, and we're excited to be able to add to that today with our guide to this episode! Check out this Google Doc for a summary of the approaches and tips from Dr. Regan and Dr. Berez-Kroeker: https://lnkd.in/dfhUdnyi Many thanks to LCL program assistant Carolyn Siegman for assembling this guide! https://lnkd.in/dP8fRg9W

Graduate education in linguistics needs to become more industry focused. I had the privilege to be interviewed by Laurel Sutton on the Linguistics Careercast podcast alongside Dr. Andrea Berez-Kroeker in which we shared our experiences on how we are actively reforming our linguistics programs to be more industry oriented. . We (professors) have been trained and socialized into a system in which the (implicit) goal has been that PhDs go into academia. However, much has changed as tenure track jobs are very few in numbers and there is a growing boom of industry jobs for linguists (and other social scientists!). It’s crucial that higher education adapts to this reality and that we prepare our graduates for industry (in addition to higher education). . Here are some key take-aways that I share in the podcast that I’ve been implementing at Texas Tech University. It’s not an exhaustive list, but it’s a start. The goal here is to share ideas with my fellow professors. . 1. Be informed by connecting with linguists in industry (informational interviews) to understand how to best guide students. LinkedIn is great for this. . 2. Make sure grad students are active on LinkedIn for networking and professional opportunities. . 3. Promote and celebrate industry jobs for our grad students. . 4. Incorporate skills and knowledge that are used in industry into graduate courses. ?. 5. Update portfolios, qualifying papers, or qualifying exams requirements to have industry-facing options. ?. 6. Invite alumni and contacts in the field who work in industry to give workshops/talks (and compensate them for their time & then tell students that they were compensated for their time; read: no free labor). ?. 7. Openly talk about salaries in academia and industry. ?. 8. Provide transparent details about the modern-day academic job market at the start of the program (if not beforehand when they inquire about the program). ?. 9. Give professionalization workshops such as how to write an industry resume (how to translate academic terminology into industry appropriate terminology). . 10. Promote (paid) internships! There are so many amazing language-related and qualitative/quantitative research internships. This should be a mainstay of graduate education. . 11. Listen to the Linguists Careercast episodes. Laurel Sutton does an amazing job of promoting linguists in industry and hearing their stories. There’s an ever-growing community of “career linguists” to quote Anna Marie Trester. We’re all linguists, let’s learn from one another! . 12. Share professionalization resources with students such as Anna Marie Trester's?"Brining Linguistics to Work"?and?"Employing Linguistics", Linguistics Careercast hosted by Laurel Sutton, LinguisticsCareer Launch youtube professionalization videos by Nancy Frishberg, Alexandra Johnston, Ph.D., Emily N. Pace, Susan Steele, & Laurel Sutton Link to episode:
