The Crnic Institute was founded in 2008 and is one of the only academic centers whose mission is fully devoted to Down syndrome research. We use state-of-the-art, transformational research platforms to decipher the unique biology and disease spectrum of people with Down syndrome. Our work spans the entire translational pipeline, from basic science to clinical research, clinical trials, and the advancement of medical care. Our ultimate goal is to enable precision medicine approaches to improve health outcomes in Down syndrome, including the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools.

Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of death for individuals with Down syndrome. Because Alzheimer’s disease affects people with Down syndrome at a much earlier age than the general population, researchers are looking for volunteers, ages 25-55, to participate in research. Through a fantastic collaboration between Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA)/Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and the Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, our study team has found the "missing puzzle piece" of a damaged blood-brain barrier in individuals with #DownSyndrome Regression Disorder (DSRD). These findings identify potential new pathways for diagnosis, treatment, and ideally, a cure of this condition!
