Limestone County has been named the fastest-growing county in the state of Alabama, according to newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The county experienced a population increase of 4,139 residents from July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024, a 3.6% growth rate. Over the past four years, Limestone County has seen an impressive population surge of 15,381 new residents, marking a 14.9% increase since 2020. The data also reveals that Limestone County ranks as the tenth most populous county in Alabama. The Huntsville metro area, including the rapidly expanding Madison and Limestone counties, ranked as the 15th fastest-growing metro in the nation. Bethany Shockney, President & CEO of the Limestone County Economic Development Association, attributed this growth to the area’s economic vitality and strategic location. “Limestone County continues to be a prime destination for businesses and families alike. Our strong job market, excellent quality of life, and strategic investments in infrastructure make this county a top choice for those looking to relocate.” Athens-Limestone Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Pammie Jimmar IOM, AACE , CGMS emphasized the role of the local business community in attracting new residents. “Our small businesses are the heartbeat of this county, creating jobs and opportunities that draw people here. The economic momentum we are seeing is a testament to the hardworking entrepreneurs and business leaders who make Limestone County a great place to live, work, and play.” Tere Richardson, Executive Director of Athens Main Street, highlighted the county vibrant downtown and historic charm as key factors in its appeal. “People want to live in communities with character, where they can walk to restaurants, shops, and events. Limestone County offers that and more, with its rich history, welcoming atmosphere, and dynamic local culture. Our growth reflects the investment and passion of those who call this place home.” Limestone County, Ala. - Commission Chairman Collin Daly underscored the importance of infrastructure and public services in managing the county’s rapid expansion. “As our county continues to grow, we remain focused on ensuring that our infrastructure, schools, and public services keep pace with the needs of our residents.” Photo: Sergeion Hobbs
