The Carrington House The Carrington House is a Fire Island Site listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1909, theater director Frederick Marquet built the bungalow, likely beginning its connection with the LGBTQ+ community. Throughout the 1930s-40s, Frank Carrington expanded the house and invited guests to stay on the maritime property, many of whom identified as LGBTQ+ including Bill Blass, Gertrude Lawrence and Truman Capote. The site and its people helped to draw artists, performers, and publishers to Fire Island and helped to establish Cherry Grove’s reputation as an artistic community- one that was accepting and friendly to LGBTQ+ people.

The Cherry Grove Community House and Theater The Cherry Grove Community House and Theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its important role in our local LGBTQ+ history. The building was originally constructed on Long Island and floated across the Great South Bay to serve as the community house for the Cherry Grove Property Owners Association INC. In 1948 a small stage was added for the newly established Arts Project of Cherry Grove. This maritime getaway provided privacy and safety to the LGBTQ+ community and provides a rich insight to the safe spaces created in the pre- Stonewall era.
