Earlier this month, in Lisbon, Portugal, a web summit was held between the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). They announced an innovative, digital partnership between them that will measure impact against human trafficking. Combining IRC’s 20 years of anti-human trafficking efforts (particularly on prevention, protection, and partnership) in the U.S. and Europe with HPE and HPE Foundation’s support, they will collaborate to counteract trafficking recruitment and exploitation strategies, especially as social media and other digital tactics are increasing. Climate change as we know it is deeply rooted in colonialism, and its destructive effects are increasingly targeting global, Indigenous communities. As a result, we need to decolonize climate policy and intensify Indigenous-led solutions, meaning we must recognize that those most affected contain the essential knowledge for best addressing the current challenges. The Decolonizing Climate Policy research project is an effective, collaborative solution to this demand that addresses the challenges and problems associated with Canadian climate policy, simultaneously using Indigenous-led climate governance approaches that aim to utilize and empower Indigenous-led solutions. The project uses Indigenous voices at all levels, including climate policy-making, respecting Indigenous sovereignty and land ownership. When we empower Indigenous voices and wisdom, more fair and effective solutions will transpire. Unfortunately, coercive debt and financial abuse are part of the debilitating way sex traffickers work in Canada. Almost a quarter of all survivors are dealing with fraudulent debt where the trafficking victim’s name was put on expenses associated with their trafficking experience, creating a detrimental lasting financial impact on them, especially while they’re rebuilding their lives. However, awareness on sex trafficking has increased, but overall familiarity with financial abuse hasn’t. As a result, there is a program called Reclaim, a Canada-wide initiative operating in some provinces that works on behalf of trafficking survivors with creditors to eliminate fraudulent debt that was incurred. Liluye would like to express its appreciation for all the hard work and collaboration of its partners. Today, we are honoring our partnership with Patricia Ngum, Founder and Chief Executive Officer for the Redemption Center for Persons in Distress (RECEPEDIS), an organization focused on supporting the vulnerable in society, especially those with mental health challenges in Cameroon. RECEPEDIS provides rescue, counseling, coaching, and psychosocial support to victims and survivors. They empower them with appropriate life skills and give them start-up capital once they are ready. They also supply medical care and detoxification for those who have been injected with harmful substances, and prevent many girls and women from trafficking by furnishing information on it, such as how to detect trafficking situations, means of protecting themselves, and where to receive support. This autumn, between September 29th and October 4th the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) conducted global raids, rescuing 3,222 potential human trafficking victims, including identifying 17,800 irregular migrants. The operation, known as Operation Liberterra II, involved 116 countries, making it the largest operation so far against human trafficking and migrant smuggling. The coordinated efforts united global UNODC experts, including law enforcement officers and prosecutors, facilitating real-time case identification and cross-border lawful cooperation. Together, global authorities performed police raids, strengthened border points, monitored almost 24,000 flights, and deployed officers to known hotspots. In total, nearly 8 million checks were conducted. Fortunately, these two organizations plan to continue to increase international cooperation, expedite intelligence sharing, and create more collaborative action against these threats. Last month in Bangkok, Thailand an urgent call to action meeting called The Asia-Pacific Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Gender Equality and Climate Action took place involving over 120 governmental, women’s rights and civil society organizations, youth, and developmental partner representatives. In response to the recent disasters across the Asia-Pacific region, it was spotlighted once again how climate crisis is disproportionately affecting women and marginalized communities. Incidentally, the forum discussions focused on the dire need for inclusive approaches to climate action, prioritizing gender equality, despite barriers. The resulting recommendations were on five main areas, acceleration of data, more equality and support, a more inclusive approach to planning and action, an urgent increase in climate finance, and addressing the link between climate change, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-based violence. Unfortunately, there’s approximately 5.4 million children in orphanages globally, and 80% have been reported to have at least one parent or family member available to care for them. But, families in poverty are vulnerable, believing that giving their children to orphanages will result in better care and education. The reality for many children results in exploitation, abuse, malnourishment, forced labor, and even retrafficking to other orphanages for profit. In addition, there is a current, popular trend that combines voluntary work with tourism where traffickers receive money from received donations and organizations offering ‘voluntourism’ placements. However, there are anti-trafficking organizations committed to stopping the placement of orphanage volunteers thus ending the demand for volunteer placements that traffickers are profiting from.
