Recently, Katherine Jaramillo, a teacher from Bogotá, shared her story and journey to combat sexual exploitation of young girls across Colombia. She has already dedicated a decade of her life to advocacy work and co-founded the Valientes, a non-profit that captures quantitative data on sexual exploitation of minors to help prevent it. Now, she works for Our Rescue, an international anti-human trafficking organization where she’s in charge of assisting with post-release victim assistance, providing support while advocating against the crime. She sees a “structural and cultural problem” behind exploitation, stating that our current culture encourages the sexualization of Colombian women to foreigners who see them as a commodity. As an activist, she strongly encourages people to question our current cultural model that turns girls into merchandise and how we can create a better future. Funders are now developing solutions to climate, gender-based violence, harassment, and exploitation across industrial, informal, and agricultural sectors as multiple problems exist. As challenges grow, organizations engaged with local communities are connecting with funders that intersect climate funding with gender justice funds, better supporting female workers facing climate change challenges. They’re also supporting local, grassroot organizations, allowing women to receive financial support, capacity building, and rights advocacy opportunities in their communities. An advocacy group known as Mecpaths is spreading awareness on child trafficking in Ireland by warning that any child there could be vulnerable to trafficking. Unfortunately, this is due to overall low detection rates across the country stemming from the lack of a national, centralized identification system for missing children who are at risk of sexual exploitation. The country is known for girls being targeted for sexual exploitation by predatory networks, and it was disclosed that 137 children who went missing in 1977 still remain missing. This Gratitude Sunday, in honor of Women's History Month, let’s recognize this group of 12 activists who are actively making the world a better place. Rather than waiting for lawmakers and law enforcement to implement necessary change, these brave women became first responders, changemakers, and activists. Among the most notable first responders in this list are Sara Mardini, Malala Yousafzai, and Nadia Murad who are founding non-profits, advocating for educational rights, and being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Some other noteworthy women include Rowida Al Sabbah who treats malnutrition among young children in Gaza, Eatizaz Yousif who provides medical, nutritional, and protection services in Sudan, and Samia who provides vital mental health services in a Syrian refugee camp. Collectively women and girls need to be involved in every decision, creating more secure and equitable spaces. Unfortunately, Florida foster families have been tackling a high number of human trafficking cases, and often children moving through the foster care system are more vulnerable to trafficking than people realize. To address this issue, a program called C.H.A.N.C.E. was recently created through the Children’s Home Network. Through this program, foster parents are taught how to care for child victims of trafficking, but also how to spot the signs, take action, and create safe homes for them. As we know climate change affects everyone, however, people of color are disproportionately affected, experiencing the effects more often and acutely. This is known as environmental racism. In light of this, there are six black women who are actively ensuring our most vital resources are protected and preserved. Namely, they are Vanessa Nakate, Tamara Toles O’Laughlin, Dorceta Taylor, Sharon Lavigne, Rhiana Gunn-Wright, and Dr. Venise Curry. Some of them are CEOs for impactful organizations, such as the Rise Up Movement, the Environmental Grantmakers Association, and RISE St. James. And, among their other collective accomplishments, they are activists, authors, and researchers fighting environmental racism, making significant contributions to climate solutions and educating others through their organizations.
