    Great Salt Lake Series Post 3: Mechanical Completion & Commissioning In September we hit two significant milestones at the pilot: mechanical completion and the start of commissioning! ?? The mechanical completion phase included installing all the Flash containers, ancillary tanks and equipment, pipe fitting, and electrical wiring to connect everything together. With that done, we’ve now moved into commissioning. Commissioning involves circulating water, pressure testing, automation testing, emergency shutdown protocol, and calibrating all meters to ensure everything operates safely and smoothly. Fun fact: This pilot is a 100% temporary installation! Once operations are complete, all structures will be removed, and the site will be restored to its original state.     Happy Monday! ?? Feels like a good day to unpack “cycle life” in the context of direct lithium extraction (DLE). It’s actually pretty similar to a battery: lithium ions are repeatedly moved in and out of a material, causing gradual wear and degradation over time. How long it takes to reach the end of useful life of that material = cycle life. For DLE, instead of the lithium ions moving in and out of anodes and cathodes, they move in and out of the DLE material to separate them from the brine from whence they came. Cycle life was historically the big challenge for applying ion exchange tech to lithium extraction, and for a long time folks just couldn’t get it past about ten cycles. Solving the issue of durability is one of the core advancements that Lilac has made for ion exchange, enabling this highly effective technology to be used economically for lithium extraction. ?? Our ion exchange material stands out with a durability exceeding 3,000 cycles—over a year of continuous operation—resulting in significantly lower operating expenses. In the end, cycle life really comes down to operating expenses—how much lithium can be extracted before the material needs to be replaced? Cycle life numbers are not apples-to-apples across DLE technologies, so ask your DLE tech provider about replacement frequency and lithium uptake from a batch of material. ??     #DirectLithiumExtraction ("DLE") is a novel, early stage way to produce #lithium from diluted brines without the need for evaporation ponds or mining mineral ore. This allows companies to extract lithium from different locations beyond the existing systems limited to South America, Australia and China, helping secure availability. In 2023, Darcy hosted two events related to #DLE. As a sequel to these events, we will host a session focused on two aspects of the #lithiumextractionspace. In the first part of the session, Lithos will present their brine pretreatment solution and how it can speed up the #DLEprocess, and make it cost efficient. In the second part, Lilac will present their Direct Lithium Extraction #technology that can work without pretreatment and has been proven in over 4 pilots. About the Innovator: LiTHOS Technologies developed "AcQUA", a revolutionary technology designed to replace evaporation ponds in lithium production, thus, reducing water usage by recycling up to 98% of input brine water and enabling quick extraction at lower costs for more technologies. AcQUA? offers a comprehensive, modular approach capable of pre-treatment, selective separation, and concentration of lithium-enriched brines. This technology circumvents the traditional challenges associated with Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) and provides a sustainable and economically viable solution for lithium brine resource operators. Lithos is currently testing its technology in Chile, Argentina, and the USA. Lilac Solutions developed a direct lithium extraction (DLE) solution based on ion exchange beads with a continuous brine processing system to enable a simple and robust process yielding concentrated high-purity lithium solutions from a wide variety of resources (continental brines and produced waters) in short periods of time. These solutions can be fed into conventional downstream processes for production of battery-grade lithium chemicals.     Great Salt Lake Series – Post 2: Pilot System Fabrication Today, let’s take a closer look at how Lilac’s pilot system is fabricated and delivered to site, and what’s in all those containers. Our pilot system, affectionately known as “Flash,” is designed, engineered, and fabricated at our Oakland, California headquarters and then shipped to site. Our skilled fabrication team starts with bare containers and transforms them into fully equipped units. They handle everything: welding, bracing, insulation, equipment installation, pipe fitting, electrical wiring, painting, and more. Off in a Flash! Once the containers are ready, they’re hoisted onto flatbed trucks using a sideloader and hit the road. Flash’s modular, reusable design allows for rapid site deployment on site. Upon arrival, the Flash containers are unloaded and then interconnected, commissioned, and tested. Inside the Flash Pilot System Flash comprises 7 containerized Lilac IX process units and 1 controls container. The 7 process containers are where the magic happens—they handle brine filtration, reagent preparation, lithium extraction, and water recovery. The process containers are all monitored and controlled from the central controls container. A Versatile Design Fun fact: Flash has a flexible design—it is equipped to go from one project site to the next and can be adapted for different brines. When the Great Salt Lake pilot is complete, Flash will be packed up and ready for the next adventure. ?? ??     The 90’s are making a comeback: scrunchies, crop tops, flannel shirts, overalls…and Lilac’s lithium recovery rates! What does it mean to have lithium recovery rates in the 90s? It means capturing over 90% of the lithium from brine, consistently across diverse brine compositions.?? The table below shows the initial performance of Gen 4 Lilac IX across wide-ranging brine grades and impurity profiles, from 70 mg/L Li to 2,210 mg/L Li, and varying levels of dissolved salts, including sodium, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and boron. While those salts might make a great electrolyte drink, you need to exclude them to produce high-quality lithium concentrate. The goal is to maximize lithium extraction while minimizing other brine salts. The eluate concentration data presented in the table is measured at the output of the Lilac IX system, before any further downstream processing to further reduce impurity levels and increase lithium concentrations.     Welcome! Today we kick off our series on building a lithium extraction pilot plant on the iconic Great Salt Lake in Utah. ?? Stay tuned for regular installments in this series covering the pilot build, brine stats, milestones along the way, and more. Great Salt Lake Series – Post 1: First Look and Pilot Purpose And we’re off!?We’re excited to share that we broke ground in June and our pilot plant is under construction on the Great Salt Lake.?The scope of the pilot includes brine pretreatment, direct lithium extraction using our Gen 4 Lilac IX technology, and downstream processing into a high-quality lithium concentrate. This pilot will showcase Lilac’s environmentally-responsible method of extracting lithium from brine resources. Our process does not contaminate the brine and maintains the lake’s water level—we send the same volume of brine back into the lake that we pump out, just minus the lithium. This is because our process does not need evaporation to pre-concentrate the brine—our Lilac IX technology will recover lithium directly from the 70 mg/L raw brine flowing from the lake. For context, 70 mg/L is about 10-30x lower lithium concentration than typical lithium production in South America. Good thing Lilac IX works really well on low-grade brines.?? The Big Picture: This pilot is an important step in the journey towards constructing a commercial-scale lithium production facility on the Great Salt Lake, also known as the Waterleaf Resources project. Lilac is working closely with partners and regulators on a phased approach to ramp up from the pilot plant to commercial production. Phase 1 of the commercial plant is planned for 5,000 tpa LCE and Phase 2 adds an additional 15,000 tpa LCE.?The combined 20,000 tpa would be a new domestic supply of lithium for the U.S. economy and is enough lithium for about 400,000 EVs. Together with our manufacturing facility in Fernley, Nevada, which will produce the IX beads needed to drive the extraction process, the Great Salt Lake project will help create a vertically integrated domestic supply chain of battery-grade lithium for the local EV industry.????
