A fantastic conversation was had yesterday with LikeBreathin.com about the state of our industry. The "A"gile industry is suffering due to misinterpretation and misuse of the term. Many organizations adopt Agile superficially, treating it as a set of practices rather than a mindset. This "cargo cult Agile" often results in poor outcomes, leading to skepticism about its value. For example, businesses might impose short sprints without empowering teams or embrace daily standups while still maintaining hierarchical decision-making structures vs. a new wirearchical structure. In some cases burnout and pressure is a main contributor, Agile practices, such as continuous delivery and frequent iterations, have led to unsustainable workloads for teams. This has fostered disillusionment among practitioners, turning them away from Agile. To restore trust and relevance, the Agile community might consider the following: 1. Revisit the core principles of the Agile Manifesto. 2. Focus on outcomes and adaptability rather than dogmatic adherence to frameworks. 3. Emphasize education over certification, ensuring practitioners understand the "why" behind Agile practices. 4. Encourage organizations to adopt Agile as a cultural shift rather than just a set of practices. We'd love to hear from you, what have you experienced in the past 10 years in your company or teams?

When things come to an end, it shows how strong your team really was - and it's still strong even after the end has finally come. Two days ago, many of my awesome colleagues were laid off due to our company pivoting - including my amazing mobile teammates and me. I'm truly grateful and proud of what we achieved together in the time we had. If you know about exciting opportunities in the area of mobile or web development, please let me know so I can share them with my fellow seeking peers. Personally, I'm keen to learn about places looking for specialized generalists like me who thrive on building great products that deliver value together with great people. Especially, if there's a clear focus on security to protect people and prevent harm. Re-posting for reach is appreciated - thank you! #QualityEngineering #Testing #SecurityChampion #SecurityEngineering #AppSec #DevSecOps #MobileDevelopment #WebDevelopment #OpenToWork

Would you be interested in investigating, exploring, and trying a way of working that might give you: - shorter lead times? - fewer bugs? - more knowledge transfer? - shorter feedback loops? - happier co-workers that know each other better? - a climate in the team that improves our ability to contribute well? - a decreased need for status and planning meetings? - an environment of amplified learning? - an effective way of on-boarding new team members? - higher quality? These are some results people find from Software Teaming / [ Mob/Ensemble Programming?] I have a few openings the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 1 to do a #SoftwareTeaming (#MobProgramming) workshop for your organization in Sweden/Denmark/Norway (or nearby). Please let me know if you are interested in exploring this. Please share.

Building capacity and community for educators (and others) ready to confront "complexity, chaos, and collapse." Founder, Future Serious Schools; Co-Founder, Big Questions Institute; Speaker, Author, Provocateur, Educator

"Education is not in conversation with reality." That's about as succinct a framing for the problem with schooling right now as I've found. It comes from Ginie Servant-Miklos, the author of the upcoming book "Pedagogies of Collapse: A Hopeful Education for The End of The World as We Know It." (Pre-ordered.) Reality is telling us that our existential challenges are becoming more complex, more impactful, and speeding up. In his latest post, Benjamin Freud, Ph.D. cites a new "2024 Living Planet Report" which states that we have five years to figure out how to change our ways if we want an Earth our kids and grandkids can inhabit. Wake up call? Yet education writ large is still focused on a "success" narrative that will do nothing to fundamentally change our current trajectory. In fact, it only serves to feed the beast. Yes, there are the outlier schools and innovators who are offering different experiences and practices in an effort to change the narrative. But even with those examples, I can't find many who explicitly reframe the outcomes of schooling around a narrative that eschews its primary purpose to be going to college to get a good job and be a contributing member of society (read: make lots of money and accrue individual wealth.) That's the "good life" path that has gotten us here in the first place. And that path is not sustainable. If education was truly engaged with reality, every school would be interrogating its "why" right now. And if I had to offer a "why" based on the realities that I'm seeing and reading, it would be along the lines of: "An education must now center on preparing our children to navigate complexity and collapse emotionally, physically, and spiritually, and to put deep emphasis on repairing the relationships we have with one another and with the planet." Our collective immunities to change are many. I get why this is so hard. But at the very least, shouldn't every school community be engaging in conversations about the realities of the world right now instead of the "move along...nothing to see here...it'll all be ok" approach? You can and should start that tomorrow, because time is running out. #education #edleadership #schooling #future #collapse

This article highlights for me that the climate crisis is not primarily a tech challenge. It is a humanities challenge: how do we affluent folks (the 10% who emit 50% of the carbon in this world) create an environment for ourselves in which small or multi-family houses ??, rapid transit ??, low-beef diets ??, water-cooled floors ??, and other climate-responsible behaviors and lifestyle features are as attractive to us as smartphones??, sufficiant to shift our behaviors? ??

I’m delighted to share that I just completed: Leading with Outcomes: Train-the-Trainer / Facilitator (TTT/F), taught by Mike Burrows from Agendashift Academy! I've been a user and fan of Agendashift's outcome-oriented approach to leadership and delivery, and their vast array of tools, for a number of years, and wanted to learn Mike's recommendations for drawing organizational strategy (goals to tactics) out of the struggles and informed-insights of the people doing the work. I look forward to inviting colleagues and clients into this Leading With Outcomes experience!

Organising for learning, leading for innovation

Kert D. Peterson, CST, AKT and Daniel Walters drew my attention overnight to a key 2-3-minute passage in the Q&A after my talk a few weeks ago. It's on the limitations of process-based and implementation-driven approaches to Agile, especially on questions of scale. Watch that bit here: https://lnkd.in/etDwu5JX (that link should take you to a bit less than 54 minutes in). If you were wondering what on earth could motivate me to pour so much effort and passion into the writing of my fifth book, here's why. If you can get yourself to London or Southampton (sorry, my Berlin training is full), there is the opportunity to get deeper into this stuff. https://lnkd.in/egMYqm_z for links to those trainings. Thought-provoking talk with Mike Burrows last night in our joint Kanban NZ, Sydney and Melbourne meetup groups (Daniel Ploeg), about "between spaces, scopes and scales, and what scaling frameworks don't tell you". I loved "be the keeper of context" and build an organisation through trust and relationships. As Mike's background is in mathematics, he sees "surprise synonymous with information. If a piece of data has no surprise in it, it hasn't told you?anything, which says a lot about organisations." Enjoy watching if you missed it! Andrea and Alex, you are offering a great gift to all who choose to attend this training: the possibility of genuine change and transformation that sticks!… not to mention “delivering toward markets in customers, instead of” what really doesn’t matter. I recommend this training to anyone who cares about the health and viability of their organization.
