    Ligo Biosciences (YC S24) is making chemical manufacturing cheaper and more sustainable, using generative AI enzyme design models. The $6 trillion chemicals industry is flawed. It produces 20% of industrial greenhouse gases and is responsible for 15% of global energy usage. Enzymes are biological catalysts and accelerate reactions in mild conditions. They offer an amazing solution for sustainable and cheap chemical manufacturing, but designing them is a huge challenge. Current enzyme engineering approaches are limited because they must start from an enzyme that already exists, resulting in a narrower range of reactions that can be catalyzed. To make real progress in chemical synthesis, the industry needs a new way to design enzymes. Ligo is developing foundational enzyme design models that learn on huge amounts of spatial data to understand the principles of catalysis. Their models allow rapid and cheap design of novel enzymes beyond those that can be reached by repurposing nature’s enzymes. Founded by Edward Harris, Arda G., and Emily Egerton-Warburton from the University of Oxford; the team met through their SynBio research and bonded over a shared love for proteins.
