Design Spotlight: The Londoner Macao What creates a lighting design that captivates and elevates? For The Londoner Macao, our focus was all about the departure from the floodlighting of the original icon - the gothic architecture. Luminaires carefully integrated into the fa?ade allow greater expression of the building’s texture, AND granular control zoning of the different layers, giving flexibility for nightly light shows. The architect challenged our team to create faux windows with realism not previously achieved, with only six inches of window box depth. To achieve this look, high-output linear graze luminaires sit at the bottom of each window box with a film mimicking drapes applied to each window to add depth and realism. Guests are further transported to London with three different replica light poles, and London icons throughout the forecourt (statues, fountains, red phone booths, a double-decker bus…).?With visual comfort being a priority, accent luminaires are carefully placed to eliminate glare and conceal from view.?? ? LED optics in replica poles assured compliance with the Macao code requirement (11 lux minimum) for vehicular and pedestrian paths. Outside of this requirement, the lighting design itself intentionally limits spill light into the sky. Controls are programmed to turn most fa?ade lighting off at midnight to conserve energy and reduce sky glow. Additionally, a majority of illuminated areas (window boxes, internal spire lights, lighting at sculpture niches) produce very little DIRECT light into the sky with precise aiming and placement. One of the key features of this design are the replica sculptures which were retrofitted to integrate fixtures at the discretion of our team. The remaining lighting utilizes optics which focus light onto the architectural features and are not designed to spill randomly into the sky. From beginning concepts to construction completion, we worked closely with the architects, contractors, and professional sculptors to deliver a solution that creates a unique experience. Here is a look at the project and a little peek at how we brought the vision to life. ?

Lighting Design Alliance would like to extend a big THANK YOU to the Performance Lighting Team for putting together an entertaining and educational event. Several of our designers received the opportunity to learn about Title 24 and what changes to expect in 2025, the future of electric vehicles and renewable energy, the intricate web of relationships in the lighting industry, and painting with light by using the "5th Facade". On top of that, the many amazing manufacturers showcased their latest and greatest technologies and gave us an inside look at what's to come. As always, we are ready to light the way forward!

What a great experience we had at the 2024 IES Lighting Conference! A big thank you to the sponsors of the event and everyone who connected with us. We loved discussing the best practices for lighting design and learning new ways to work with technology (and make it work for us). Our team returned enlightened and inspired by the industry professionals who dove into detail on an array of topics including lighting's impact on crime, using AI to improve workflow, the "Phantom Ray Effect", and more. We're excited about the new ideas and collaborations that emerged and intend to utilize them as we continue to provide the best services. Stay tuned for more updates and innovations from our team at LDA. Let's continue to light the way forward!?
