It was a busy day at our Lighthouse headquarters in Pontiac! About 45 volunteers with The Gathering Church in Farmington Hills spent their “Serve Day” assisting us in a variety of ways. They painted, deep cleaned our pantry, organized donations, completed administrative tasks, and did a some serious spring cleaning in our outdoor spaces, too. “Serve days are opportunities for the church to get out of the church building and into the community to help in labor and love,” explained church member Amina Guvetis who helped organize the effort. Lighthouse relies on contributions from individuals, organizations, and corporations to help local families in need. Five years ago this month, the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changed how Lighthouse provides services to the most vulnerable members of our community. With Herculean support from volunteers, partners and donors, Lighthouse's emergency food and shelter programs pivoted quickly to meet the needs of the community. Today demand for both food and shelter remains at an all time high. The tenuous safety net in our country exposed by the pandemic still exists, and current funding and policy changes are creating a great deal of uncertainty for nonprofit organizations like ours. Every night and every day, our hardworking, dedicated team and partners across our community work to help families in need. And it's getting more challenging. Our CEO Ryan Hertz explains why in this article below. As the number of families and children facing homelessness increases, the services meant to connect people with housing help are stretched thin, overwhelmed and underfunded, area providers say. “The homeless service system is deeply under resourced across the entire continuum, from the day that somebody picks up the phone to call somebody for help around their eviction, to if they get evicted looking for shelter, to rental assistance for stopping the eviction, for rehousing people, for supportive housing for people. It’s all deeply under-resourced now,” said Ryan Hertz, president and CEO of Pontiac-based Lighthouse, which runs family and unaccompanied youth shelters and develops affordable housing. Aside from during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hertz said he doesn’t recall a time when there were enough shelter beds to meet the scope of need. Emergency funds and a moratorium on evictions helped meet the need at the time. But now, it’s “significantly worse” than before the pandemic, he said. Click below to read more. JOIN THE LIGHTHOUSE TEAM! Lighthouse is hiring a Youth Advisory Board Coordinator. The Youth Advisory Board will play a key role in integrating and centering youth and young adults voices and experiences. Our ideal candidate is someone who has experience with youth leadership and lived experience with homelessness. The goal of this position is to establish, support, grow and lead a Youth Advisory Board as part of our Youth Homelessness Systems Improvement initiative. This is a full-time, remote role.
