Lighthouse Silicon Valley is a non-profit organization poised to become a regional and national leader working at the intersection of green jobs and basic income to create economic mobility pathways for disenfranchised and disconnected communities of color, youth, and other marginalized populations across the region. Lighthouse aims to foster a cross-sector network to ensure that the most socially and economically marginalized residents of Silicon Valley would be able to weather the economic and social storms from the pandemic. As a convener, we bring together policy makers, funders, and program implementers to create solutions to systemic challenges that have kept economic opportunities out of reach for communities of color and youth in the foster care system. Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) provides a path to establishing a community of belonging and support, as we increase opportunities for our most vulnerable populations. We provide JEDI training, workshops, modules, and a “Next Generation” Young Women’s Leadership Academy to build the necessary capacity, guidance, and governance for inclusive programming and development.

Some moments feel bigger than others - and some moments show that we are exactly where we should be.. I was able to have the last word and chose to focus on our similarities - not our differences.. It was beautiful to connect my work from over 20 years ago by talking about my relationship with Dr. Dick Briggs from UAB - and traveling for 6 months across the country with a rock band of pulmonologists spreading the gospel around COPD and smoking cessation.. It was an accredited Continuing Medical Education series that even landed me on plantations in different parts of the country (I’ve got stories).. Yet, I was this barely 24/25 year old Black kid with these older white men - and they all took me under their wing (shoutout to Dr. Dennis Doherty, too).. They told me that I was the future - and I believed them.. It was the support that I needed which is why I was able to wax poetic in a room filled with researchers, the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Health, and more. A moment that I’ll eventually share with ZYP - and let her know that her Daddy held his own - and left with even more friends and the possibility of more partners in the future for Lighthouse Silicon Valley. Now to focus on the work - or attempt to…. #NoLosses #ZYPsDaddy

To all my #guarenteedincome researchers/pilot evaluators out there. If you find that pilot participants are spending less time at their paid job and more time caring for their kids or other family members, it is a mistake to frame it as "GI pilot participants are working less." When you do that, you are denying the fact that care work is WORK. In many cases they actually may be working more. SAY THAT. Point out the problem about child care. Value the work many people are doing to take care of families. I know journalists and policy folks will ask - are people working less with GI because we are so obsessed with paid work in this country and devalue care. If you answer them yes or provide them a false stat that is only pertaining to paid work, you are contributing to the problem.
