Analytics Engineering Advocate - Lightdash ?? & dbt!

I built something at Lightdash - go checkout the new lightdash-templates repo! If you use BigQuery and Lightdash, you can now get a usage tracking dashboard set up from scratch in less than 10 minutes.

After we released dashboards-as-code in Lightdash, the next obvious feature was to create template dashboards that our users and community could use. No more 0-1 dashboard building, get going with a best practice template on day 1. Oliver Ramsay from our team recorded a quick demo showing you can use them to get a dashboard for tracking your warehouse usage in BigQuery without writing any SQL or creating any charts yourself! We have many more plans for how folks will build and interact with these dashboards coming up (AI anyone?) - but excited to share this with the community! Link in the comments to the release post and a link to templates you can try yourself, excited to hear feedback!

Last night the 10th #dbt Meetup, hosted by Juan Manuel Perafan, came to the Nimbus Intelligence office. The talks and my takeaways.: Mikkel Dengs?e, Co-Founder of SYNQ, presented a strategic approach to testing in dbt. My main takeway was the the slide grouping tests, from which I learned about the unique_combination_of_columns to test for uniqueness of a record based on multiple columns. Hamzah Chaudhary, CEO and Co-Founder of Lightdash, summarized in his presentation the insights coming from setting up the data stacks of more than 100 teams. My main takeaway was the importance of "building guardrails instead of stop signs", when fostering data literacy. #dbtmeetup #analyticsengineering

Trees are good for the planet, and metric trees are good for your data reporting needs too

    查看Oliver Laslett的档案

Co-Founder & CTO @ Lightdash - Building the fastest engineering team on the planet

A data model is ok. But the best data teams on the planet understand their business' growth model. That's because a lot of the most powerful interactions in a business are very hard to capture and measure. For example, does better customer support improve product retention? How would you measure that in your data warehouse? You could spend months trying to build all the right attribution into your data tables. A much simpler alternative is to build a Metric Tree for your business. A simple chart showing your KPIs and the component metrics that drive them. It's a powerful and liberating way to model your metrics. If your data team is not feeling that impactful, I encourage you to sit down with stakeholders and map out this tree. Start with the core KPIs and for each KPI decide the 3 biggest drivers that you believe influence it. Model them out and join them up in a tree. Whether KPIs are growing or not, you'll have a clear starting place to start debugging "why" the KPIs are moving and then you can move to understand what changes we need to make. This requires no new data infrastructure but will substantially improve your ability to find growth levers. I've seen teams doing this in figma/miro/eraser, which is a great start but it doesn't allow you track the performance of the metrics within the tree, you need live data. In Lightdash you can now build your metrics into trees. The new Lightdash Canvas, allows you build out that growth model but also to monitor it. In our beta testing, a lot of customers have started using their metric trees as their core dashboard, since they give a very quick overview of "how the business is doing" but also the "why". Try it out and I'd love to know what you think

Two weeks left for our NFL Data Modelling Challenge (Lightdash x paradime.io) and we've secured 3 more amazing judges from the data world... One of these storied folk helped kickstart their colourful data career a long time ago with online kaggle challenges which are kinda similar to our NFL challenge! We have: ? Marta Paes who does Product @ Materialize - Marta is a beacon of pragmatism in today's data landscape, wonderfully opinionated and building the amazing operational data store Materialize using her power combo of solid data eng background + excellent user empathy. ? Caro Boeri Dollberg the Head of Analytics & Strategy @ Tasman Analytics - Caro has great knowledge and expertise across the data space, and applies this at the outstanding boutique consultancy Tasman where Caro works with many other data leaders to help them and their companies make the most out of their data. ? Jake Barnett the founder @ Day1Data - having been in the weeds with marketing data combined with the experience of working in several product roles, Jake has started a company to help other companies make better marketing decisions with a fractional marketing team. Think you have what it takes to impress Marta, Caro, Jake, and the other judges? Two weeks left to show off your SQL skills, or maybe just learn something new :) https://lnkd.in/eBSv9_zA

Dashboards as code is here! Now, your entire BI stack can be managed and version-controlled in Lightdash. Reach out if you want to learn more ??

When Oliver and I started Lightdash, we wanted to bring real developer workflows to data teams, borrowing from the best of software engineering. I remember having an early conversation with David Jayatillake about how great it would be to have dashboards that could be version-controlled and stored in git and managed just like a software eng team would. No more worrying about who changed that chart, why did it break unexpectedly or "crap, we just deleted that super-important-dashboard". Yesterday, we shipped just that. In Lightdash, every part of your BI stack can now be version-controlled and managed programmatically, which means you also get all the benefits of automated testing, validation and governance. Incredible work led by Javier Rengel Jimenez and Katie Hindson!
