“If you don't get the body in the job, then you provide less service.?You are a restaurant that doesn't open all their tables.?You're a hospital that doesn't fill all of their beds.?You're a construction company that doesn't build all of the homes that you were hoping to build.” The Silver Tsunami has hit the shore. Millions of Boomers are retiring, putting pressure on key industries to adapt. Our Sr. Economist Ron Hetrick spoke to Scripps News correspondent Adi Guajardo about the impact on the labor market. Incarceration are taking prime-age men out of the labor market in the US. 1.9 million people are in prison, jail, or a correctional facility. Men account for 93% of the total—77% of whom are in the prime working age of 25 to 54. In other words, the prison system holds the population equivalent of a large US city—just of prime-age men who are not working full-time jobs, not supporting themselves or their families, and not advancing in their careers. What can be done? The causal connections between low labor force participation and incarceration are complicated. We dig into it more here: https://lnkd.in/e7ZH6VpX cc: Hannah Grieser Ron Hetrick Christopher Laney, EdD, MBA, CWDP #prisonpopulation #missingworkers
