Our Christopher Laney, EdD, MBA, CWDP headed to Sarasota, FL to discuss how The Rising Storm of worker shortages will impact their local area. He delved into the age disparity of workforce entrants, and those primed to exit: With the average age of retirement in the U.S. at 61, there are 249,000 residents in Sarasota over the age of 55. HEALTHCARE is in the eye of the labor shortage storm — a Category 5! https://lnkd.in/efJ5_XAy The aging US population puts healthcare in an especially challenging position for 2 reasons. First and foremost, older adults need more healthcare than younger populations. Second, five million healthcare workers are over the age of 55 (out of roughly 20 million total), so retirements in this industry will be particularly significant—and solutions all the more important. Learn more about how we prepare and mitigate the upcoming onslaught in our newest Lightcast research report, THE RISING STORM.

In his foreword to The Future of European Competitiveness, former President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, wrote of the need for a skills revolution to keep pace with the AI revolution: “We must unlock our innovative potential. This will be key not only to lead in new technologies, but also to integrate AI into our existing industries so that they can stay at the front. A central part of this agenda will be giving Europeans the skills they need to benefit from new technologies, so that technology and social inclusion go together.” Lightcast and CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies) recently held a roundtable discussion in Brussels to explore how AI can be optimised for people and place, looking at the role of transversal skills in the age of AI, and how cities and regions can adapt their strategies to prepare for future-ready workforce. Millions of Boomers are retiring, putting pressure on key industries to adapt. Our Sr. Economist Ron Hetrick spoke to Scripps News correspondent Adi Guajardo about the impact on the labor market. Incarceration are taking prime-age men out of the labor market in the US. 1.9 million people are in prison, jail, or a correctional facility. Men account for 93% of the total—77% of whom are in the prime working age of 25 to 54. In other words, the prison system holds the population equivalent of a large US city—just of prime-age men who are not working full-time jobs, not supporting themselves or their families, and not advancing in their careers. What can be done? The causal connections between low labor force participation and incarceration are complicated. We dig into it more here: https://lnkd.in/e7ZH6VpX cc: Hannah Grieser Ron Hetrick Christopher Laney, EdD, MBA, CWDP #prisonpopulation #missingworkers
