Our Roxbury Night Lights Walk on Monday was a great success of fruitful conversation and inspiration through experience! Edward Bartholomew and Chrisoula Moraitis were the hosts of the presentation and light walk on behalf of Bartholomew | Lighting, with BosNOMA (Boston Chapter of NOMA) helping organize the event. It was so exciting to see over 30 people gather in person to experience the passionate community of Roxbury and Nubian Square and the many layers of lighting that illuminate this area at night. Thank you to BUILD (Black United in Lighting & Design), Boston Illuminating Engineering Society, and LIGHT Boston for co-sponsoring this event with us, and thank you to Carlos from Reflex Lighting for sponsoring our after event venue, food and drinks! Thank you to Cyrus Dahmubed from Utile taking our group on an architecture and lighting tour of the renovated Boston Public Library, Roxbury branch to begin our walk. Lastly, we'd like to thank Keith Yancey from Lam Partners for sharing about the Bruce C. Bolling building design and urban lighting strategies. We will be returning to Nubian Square again in the future for another Night Walk as the area continues to develop and change. We are inviting any community members and leaders from the Roxbury area to meet at the Roxbury Branch of the Boston Public Library November 13th at 5:00PM to begin this discussion. From our last Light Justice Night Walk through the Nubian Square area of Roxbury, we saw this mural left in the dark, instead of being highlighted to show the culture and history of the area. Bartholomew Lighting will engage with the community to find the best way to light this art through Light Justice Principles. At the recent International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) Enlighten Americas, Edward Bartholomew led a significant conversation on “Lighting as Social Justice Advocacy.” As co-founder of Light + Justice and a leading voice for equity in lighting design, Edward discussed how lighting impacts social justice, especially in underserved communities. He emphasized the importance of ethical lighting practices that avoid "policing" communities with excessive surveillance and instead foster spaces that are inclusive and respectful. During the talk, Edward highlighted his advocacy work with BUILD (Black United in Lighting & Design), which he co-founded to increase diversity in the industry and support Black lighting professionals. He also recounted recent Light + Justice night walks—experiential tours he organizes to expose the disparities in lighting quality within urban neighborhoods. A recent walk in Boston’s Roxbury-Nubian Square illustrated the stark shift from well-lit, affluent areas to poorly illuminated, underserved zones, revealing the socio-economic impact of inadequate lighting. The talk also introduced the Light Justice NOW award, in collaboration with designing lighting and Randy Reid, which Bartholomew hopes will inspire designs that prioritize the needs of vulnerable communities. This award, debuting at LightFair 2025, reflects the Light + Justice vision to celebrate projects that make positive impacts through lighting. His work urges the industry to rethink lighting standards, especially in institutional and public spaces, to advance equity and justice through thoughtful, accessible design. As an exampke of these projects, Neha Sivaprasad presented some of the work she has done in The Tenderloin district of San Francisco where she worked with local artists and business owners to use lighting and art to bring back dignity to a neighbourhood that was neglected.
