For a nonprofit board of directors to govern effectively, it must harness the insights and perspectives of all of its members. As a board member, it is your duty to actively participate in discussions and decisions. #nonprofitboard #governance #boardofdirectors #activeparticipation #nonprofits #boardtraining

Rather than post my regular weekly article, I would like to share my thoughts on George Mason University's inaugural Partnerships for Impact event held on April 17, 2024. This was an invitation-only event (thanks to Jacqueline Connor for my ticket) bringing together a select group of "Corporate Executives, University Senior Leadership, and Visionaries in Government and Nonprofits to explore emerging trends and best practices in business and higher education, particularly in the face of a rapidly changing workforce landscape." Daryl Sng, Principal Director of Sustainability for Accenture, served as the opening keynote speaker and left me with a quote that will stick with me. "Sustainability is the new digital - it touches every aspect of today's businesses" gave me a fresh look at the concept of sustainability. In my role as a nonprofit executive, the term has always been linked to finances. Nearly every grant application asks for a sustainability plan for when the grant ends. As a national parks enthusiast and hiker, I think of sustainability in terms of how we must be better stewards of our planet. Mr. Sng challenged me to use sustainability as a lens to view every aspect of the nonprofits with whom I consult - from boards of directors to systems to staff to programming to operations to partnerships. Two other keynotes, Maurice A. Jones (an expert on economic mobility and CEO of OneTen, "a coalition of leading chief executives and their companies who are coming together to upskill, hire and promote one million Black Americans over the next 10 years who do not yet have a four-year degree into family-sustaining jobs with opportunities for advancement," and Matt Lira (executive Director for Invest America) both spoke of partnerships in terms of creating an ecosystem rather than a transactional relationship. This was also a new concept, as I have long thought of true partnerships as relationships where both parties benefit equally. Their twist was explaining that partnerships should be a dynamic system of parties who each have the potential to thrive due to their relationships with each other. Mr. Lira explained this means we must take the risk of "authentically including people in a process whom we do not need at the moment." In other words, "Build bridges before you need them." Going forward, I will be pondering how to include these dynamic new understandings of sustainability and partnerships into my work with nonprofit executives and boards of directors. I hope this little taste of new ideas leads you to delve more deeply into them as well. I will begin my new series of articles on Principles of Good Governance for Nonprofit Boards next week, since sharing insights from yesterday's conference seemed too important to not share right away. See you then. Jacqueline Connor Zuzana Steen Megan Healy Jinnae Monroe
