Earlier this week, the US government suspended the refugee resettlement program, impacting countless individuals seeking safety and stability. We are heartbroken by this decision, as we know the devastating challenges faced by refugees. When people are displaced by violence, instability, or natural disasters, they are forced to leave everything they know behind—their homes, belongings, and livelihoods. Resettlement in a safe country, like the United States, is a lifeline. Although this decision affects our work with newly arriving families in Utah, our mission remains the same. We will continue to do everything we can to make resettled refugees feel welcome after a long journey of uncertainty. This moment does not define refugees, but our response helps define us. Joyce is a leader, fighter, and mother. From escaping the civil war in South Sudan to speaking out against gender based violence in Uganda, she’s spent over a decade committed to building a better, safer future for her children. Even under immense pressure and threats, Joyce refused to back down, advocating for the right of all children to go to school. Today, Joyce’s family calls Utah home, and they’re finally able to safely access the education she spent years fighting for.
