Today, we celebrated the grand opening of Common Ground, a peer drop-in center at LifeWorks, created in partnership with Integral Care-Austin, TX. Designed for youth ages 13-17, this space is built to foster connection, support, and healing. At its core, peer support is about young people with shared experiences uplifting one another through guidance and understanding. At Common Ground, youth will find a safe and welcoming environment where they can study, relax, engage in social activities, or seek support from Peers who truly understand. This space is thoughtfully designed with sensory-friendly items, computers, board games, a quiet corner, Peer Support, and certified Family Partner support—ensuring that both youth and their guardians have access to resources that promote stability and well-being. Thank you DA Jose Garza, Representative Donna Howard, Council Member José Velásquez, and Liz Castaneda and Noah Abdenour with Texas Health and Human Services, who took the time to visit today and see firsthand how this space will serve young people in our community. This #BHM, we recognize Addie L. Wyatt, a powerhouse in the labor and civil rights movements. As one of the first Black women to hold leadership in the labor union movement, Wyatt dedicated her life to fighting for fair wages, better working conditions, and the rights of Black workers—especially Black women, who faced both racial and gender discrimination. Her leadership in the United Packinghouse Workers of America and advocacy alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped shape the labor movement and push for economic justice. She understood that fair wages and stable jobs weren’t just economic issues—they were human rights issues. ?? What’s the difference between sheltered and unsheltered homelessness? Sheltered homelessness refers to staying in shelters, transitional housing, or temporary accommodations. Unsheltered homelessness means sleeping on the streets, in cars, or abandoned spaces—not intended for living and exposed to the elements. For youth, homelessness often goes unseen. Many unsheltered youth spend their days in libraries or cafes, making their struggles less visible to the public. The numbers tell a powerful story: ?? In 2016, 48% of unhoused youth in Austin were unsheltered. ?? By 2024, that number grew to 89%. At LifeWorks, our Street Outreach team works tirelessly to connect these young people to essential resources like housing, counseling, and workforce services—helping them take steps toward stability and independence.
