A new powerhouse in longevity science formed through the merger of Lifespan.io and SENS Research Foundation.

关于我们

Lifespan Research Institute is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on developing, promoting, and ensuring widespread access to regenerative medicine solutions targeting the disabilities and diseases of aging, combining direct research efforts with robust education, affiliation, and outreach programs. In addition to intramural research programs, Lifespan Research Foundation supports research projects at universities and institutes around the world with the goal of curing such age-related diseases as macular degeneration, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. Educating the public about how we can solve the economic and political issues stemming from an aging world population and training researchers to support a growing regenerative medicine field are also major endeavors of the organization that are being accomplished though advocacy campaigns and educational programs. Lifespan Research Institute is dedicated to ensuring that the benefits of longevity research are accessible on the international stage, with the aim of creating a future where everyone has access to biomedical advancements.

At the end of 2022, YOU voted to tell us which aspect of aging research should take priority. The choice was clear: extracellular matrix repair. Now, thanks to your feedback, LRI is funding innovative research at the University of Sydney, where Dr. Ziyu Wang’s team is developing targeted nanodevices to restore stiffened, aging arteries by repairing damaged elastin, a key protein that keeps arteries flexible. Arterial stiffening is a major driver of heart disease and hypertension. By addressing this root cause of vascular aging, this research could significantly lower the risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and other related pathologies, helping people live longer, healthier lives. A new preprint from the Sharma Lab at LRI presents key findings on senescence markers. One of the biggest challenges in developing senolytic therapies is specificity. While many markers of senescence have been identified, none are entirely reliable because they can also appear in healthy cells under certain conditions. This overlap makes it difficult to distinguish senescent cells in aging and diseased tissues and to target them for destruction without affecting healthy cells. A new preprint from Dr. Amit Sharma and his team at Lifespan Research Institute identifies a surface protein that could serve as both a universal and specific marker for senescent cells, including those from tissues in organisms. The team also successfully targeted this protein with weaponized antibodies, selectively eliminating senescent cells while sparing healthy ones. If confirmed, in other disease models and tissue, this discovery could provide scientists with a powerful tool for conducting more accurate and reliable research on cellular senescence in aging and disease. It could also pave the way for the development of highly effective senolytic therapies, potentially addressing a major factor in aging and advancing longevity research. • Eating an unhealthy #diet, even in moderation, may have unintended consequences. A new study from Hospital of the university of Tübingen, German Center for Diabetes Research (Deutsches Zentrum für Diabetesforschung, DZD), and Helmholtz Munich shows that short-term overeating alters brain insulin sensitivity—potentially affecting metabolism and weight regulation. Led by Dr. Stephanie Kullmann and co-authored by Dr. Andreas Birkenfeld, this research highlights how even brief dietary changes can impact brain function. February is packed with celebrations like Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine’s Day, and Galentine’s Day. But did you know it’s also the month when the UN recognizes Women and Girls in Science worldwide? This year’s theme for International Day of Women and Girls in Science is Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science. I think it’s a powerful call to action for business leaders and many more changemakers to listen, uplift, and take action to ensure that every voice in STEM is heard and valued. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)* are shaping our world, from AI and climate tech to medicine and space exploration. But too often, the voices of women, girls, and nonbinary people in these fields go unheard. How many discoveries have been missed? How many breakthroughs could have been accelerated with more diverse perspectives? Diversity, equity, and inclusion is not just about filling gaps—it’s about honoring the need for every individual to be seen, heard, and respected in their field. Even though there’s a lot of noise around DEI right now, I know one thing for sure. The world’s most pressing challenges—climate change, food security, health crises—demand the brightest minds and the full spectrum of talent, innovation, and creativity. From every background. This belief is why I’m committed to amplifying voices in STEM. Whether in the lab, boardroom, classroom, or virtual space, we simply need all hands on deck to build an inclusive, sustainable, and ethical future. So today, I ask you: How can we better support women and girls in STEM? Whether through mentorship, policy changes, speaking up, or simply sharing stories of women in STEM in your digital platforms, actions both big and small can make a difference. ?? Make sure to share this post and the links below in order to keep the conversation going! And if you haven’t yet, please subscribe to my Be Voracious newsletter on Substack to get insights straight to your inbox.? PS I’ll be dropping links in the comments to articles and videos showcasing more voices of women in STEM. ?? Sharing photos of some amazing women and girls in STEM that I’ve had the incredible opportunity to work with. Unable to tag each one, but big cheers to all these voices making the world a better place! *You may also have seen the acronyms STEMM (+Medicine) and STEAM (+Art), which expand this constellation of awesome fields that make the world better! #womenandgirlsinscience #womeninstem #womeninstemm #womeninsteam #diversity #equity #inclusion
