A new preprint from the Sharma Lab at LRI presents key findings on senescence markers. One of the biggest challenges in developing senolytic therapies is specificity. While many markers of senescence have been identified, none are entirely reliable because they can also appear in healthy cells under certain conditions. This overlap makes it difficult to distinguish senescent cells in aging and diseased tissues and to target them for destruction without affecting healthy cells. A new preprint from Dr. Amit Sharma and his team at Lifespan Research Institute identifies a surface protein that could serve as both a universal and specific marker for senescent cells, including those from tissues in organisms. The team also successfully targeted this protein with weaponized antibodies, selectively eliminating senescent cells while sparing healthy ones. If confirmed, in other disease models and tissue, this discovery could provide scientists with a powerful tool for conducting more accurate and reliable research on cellular senescence in aging and disease. It could also pave the way for the development of highly effective senolytic therapies, potentially addressing a major factor in aging and advancing longevity research.
