Just as he was beginning to make end of life plans, even selecting the songs he wanted played at his funeral, John Vosberg got the call that a match had been found and he would be getting a new heart. July 23rd, 2017, marked the first day of a new life. Writing to a donor family can be challenging, but after his transplant, John was eager to reach out. He wanted the opportunity to share his gratitude for the incredible gift he received. This communication resulted in something more than he ever could have hoped; a Heart Sister. Through an exchange of letters with his donors sister, John noticed that the relationship between his donor and donors sister was much like the relationship with his own sister. He decided to write, "If you're ever interested, there's enough room in this heart for another sister." This is when he gained a forever "heart sister," as he likes to call her. She remains a part of his life to this day. John is forever grateful to his donor and donor family. He is living life to the fullest with his family (and heart sister) by his side, not taking a single moment for granted. He is also an Ambassador for LifeSource and an incredible advocate for donation in the community. Intelligent, talented and hard working. These are just a few words to describe Sam. At just sixteen years old, she began to feel ill with what was thought to be the flu or COVID-19. Following some initial blood work done by her pediatrician, they received a call that Sam needed to be taken to the ER immediately. The startling reality of her condition shook her entire family. She was diagnosed with end stage renal disease and both of her kidneys were failing. In January 2022, Sam was placed on the pediatric organ transplant waiting list, but was told that it may be harder for her to find a match, based both on her blood type and her Hispanic ethnicity. Studies show that African Americans, Pacific Islanders and Hispanics are three times more likely to require a kidney transplant than white Americans. Additionally, Hispanic Americans receive disproportionately fewer organ transplants than non-Hispanic whites. Sam's mom, Frances, worked in healthcare for years and has done deep work in shaping equity in healthcare management. “As a healthcare professional and woman of Hispanic origin, I want to continue to raise awareness about organ donation and organ equity. I teach Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Healthcare Management to students at the University of Minnesota, and we have a very diverse student population. It’s so important for us to raise awareness of organ donation because you never know when you might need one, or when someone else might need you.” After being on the waiting list for five months, Sam finally received a kidney transplant that would save her life. She has learned to embrace a new normal and is grateful to her donor every day. *These healthcare disparities reinforce the need for National Minority Donor Awareness Month (NMADM) education and outreach to help heal and save lives in our communities. August is NMADM. It is a collaborative initiative of the National Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Multicultural Action Group (NMAG) to save and improve the quality of life of diverse communities by creating a positive culture for organ, eye and tissue donation.
