National Addictions Awareness Week seeks to highlight solutions and address the harms related to drug and alcohol use. Here are some of the more common myths about addiction.??At Lifeskills we offer a comprehensive approach to treatment including the client and family system. We recognize the challenges involved in getting you or a loved one help. Our skilled Admissions Team will guide you through the process and provide recommendations as needed. ? Myth 1: Friends and family members cannot make addicts get help if they do not want it. ?? Fact 1: Addiction is a family disease that disrupts family dynamics thus a strong support system of family and friends is crucial for recovery.? More often than not, without the intervention of loved ones, someone in the throes of addiction will not voluntarily seek help. They do not have to “hit rock bottom” which could be deadly! ? Myth 2: Relapse means treatment did not work. ?? Fact 2: Research shows the 90 days post-treatment are when relapse is most common. Instead of seeing it as failure, it can be viewed as an indication their treatment plan needs adjustment. Did they follow their aftercare plan? This could mean adding more 12-step meetings, working more closely with a sponsor and sober social support systems, recognizing triggers to avoid, increasing self-care like exercise or yoga, identifying the need for additional therapy or programming such as a Partial-Hospitalization (PHP) or Intensive Out-Patient (IOP).? ? Myth 3: Maintaining a job and family life means addiction is not a problem. ?? Fact 3: Those with addiction often rationalize and experience denial, believing that keeping a job, maintaining interpersonal relationships, or parental duties means they are "functioning." This belief can minimize the seriousness of their illness and prevent them from seeking the help they need.? A “functioning” addict is still an addict and may require pressure to get the help they need. If you or someone you know is struggling, contact our admissions team at 954-212-9708. We are here for you. You are NOT alone.?? Learn more here: https://hubs.li/Q02ZnV320 #mentalhealth #lifeskillssouthflorida #addictionawareness
