Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness

关于我们

LifeMoves is the largest and most effective nonprofit committed to ending the cycle of homelessness for families and individuals in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. Our successful and multi-faceted therapeutic service model combines clean, modern housing with intensive supportive services that promote dignity and respectfully motivate our clients to achieve autonomy. LifeMoves programs combat homelessness today – and tomorrow – by teaching comprehensive life skills that help our clients achieve long-term self-sufficiency, and effectively break the cycle of homelessness. Our innovative and effective program model requires accountability from our clients. The LifeMoves program helps clients understand the root cause of their homelessness and then focuses them on developing core competencies and the skills they need to succeed in the long-term. Similarly, our in-depth programming for children provides academic support to help bridge achievement gaps, and physical and mental health support to address the extensive issues caused by the trauma of homelessness. The focus is on maximizing opportunities for homeless youth to help them mature into self-sufficient adults and to end intergenerational poverty which leads to homelessness. The impact of LifeMoves programs and services is tremendous: Last year, 82% of families and 65% of individuals engaged in our shelter programs successfully returned to stable housing and self-sufficiency.

Meet Lissette, a program aide, intake coordinator, and residential service coordinator at Georgia Travis House. In her year and a half with LifeMoves, she wears many hats, all dedicated to creating a safe and supportive space for both clients and staff. Her quiet yet mighty demeanor helps foster a welcoming environment, and what makes it even more rewarding? The amazing team she works with every day. #lifemoves #lifemovesorg #webelieve #changemakers

Yesterday, LifeMoves CEO Aubrey Merriman joined an insightful panel hosted by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, which was facilitated by SVCF CEO Nicole Taylor and discussed the growing need for housing and food security in our region.

Unapologetic Hope-A-Holic! Chief Executive Officer at LifeMoves

Deep gratitude and appreciation to the entire Silicon Valley Community Foundation team and community for coming together to shine the light on the challenges faced by so many of our neighbors and for creating space and grace to have such an honest and thoughtful conversation. It was such an honor to represent LifeMoves and share the stage with Nicole Taylor, Leslie Bacho, and Judith Guerrero. I also appreciate you including other amazing leaders and nonprofit partners in the audience like Poncho Guevara, Laura Bent, and #DavidCox to add their valuable perspectives. Nicole Taylor, thank you for choosing to leverage your platform to advocate, challenge, and create opportunities for powerful local investments in this critical work It is tempting to believe the narratives that poverty and homelessness are based on individual circumstances and choices rather than the systemic and structural issues at play. Because those are much harder to talk about and solve for, and we have a collective responsibility to fix them. We realize that it’s not people who are broken, it’s the systems that are broken, and have failed them. In Silicon Valley, we understand that the challenges loom large. While the area’s tech industry boom brought our region great prosperity, the gap between the poor and the wealthy only continues to widen. Today, we see staggering wealth flourishing in plain sight of heartbreaking poverty and innovative companies thrive, where thousands struggle to secure a safe place to sleep at night or food to eat. Many of our region’s once burgeoning working class are now buckling under the weight of spiraling inflation, rental hikes and a higher cost of living, problems only compounded by an acute housing shortage and lagging wages that have been stretched beyond their reasonable capacity. The pandemic protections and seismic shifts are reverting to mediocrity, but the intensity of the needs are at pandemic levels, if not higher. To provide context, at LifeMoves we have the opportunity to partner with more than 7,400 unique clients per year. We see one in three clients experiencing homelessness for the first time, one in five of our beds occupied by children, a rise in the number of 55-and-older clients, and a sharp increase in clients reporting one or more disabilities. LifeMoves is a proud agent of change in a larger ecosystem made up of public benefit organizations, public-sector partners, philanthropy, private investors, volunteers, and other stakeholders whose respective efforts aim to uplift, empower, partner, support and drive solutions to those in our communities without stable housing. What you might not see is how this impact is being delivered through LifeMoves and other critical safety net service providers, and homeless response systems for those most impacted by this crisis in communities across the region.

LifeMoves is excited to attend the 2024 National Lived Experience Leadership Conference in San Jose, where those with firsthand experience of homelessness are leading the way in building solutions. Co-hosted by our partners at Destination: Home and the National Coalition for the Homeless, this event brings together advocates to drive community-led change as we work together toward equitable solutions to end homelessness. We’re especially proud of our team members Brandi Andino, Isabella A. Karabed, ASW, and Cody Mclean, who will co-facilitate the session “From Client to Staff.” They’ll share how LifeMoves supports clients in accessing job opportunities within our organization, demonstrating our commitment to amplifying the voices of those we serve. #lifemoves #lifemovesorg #webelieve #changemakers #NLELC24
