LifeLink? of Georgia is an independent, non-profit organ and tissue recovery organization dedicated to serving patients in need of transplant therapy and their families. This organization is one of five divisions of LifeLink? Foundation, located in Tampa, Florida.
BACKGROUND:
There are 57 programs similar to LifeLink of Georgia in the United States. LifeLink collaborates with hospitals, medical professionals, other agencies (such as medical examiners and law enforcement) and the public to increase awareness of the growing need for organ and tissue donation. LifeLink medical professionals are on call 24 hours daily. LifeLink operates under the authority of the Social Security Act and in accordance with the National Organ Transplant Act passed by Congress in 1984.
AREA SERVED:
159 counties in Georgia, 9.8 million population, 193 hospitals in Georgia and two hospitals in South Carolina.
WAITING LIST:
More than 5,600 Georgians are actively waiting for a kidney, pancreas, heart and/or liver transplants. More than 120,000 Americans wait for organ transplants. Thousands wait for tissue transplants.
ORGANS & TISSUES RECOVERED:
Kidneys, liver, heart, pancreas, lungs, intestines, bone, skin, heart valves, corneas.
NUMBER BENEFITING:
One donor can potentially benefit 60 or more people.

Since she was 28 years old, Marie Ruiz-Popa has fought glaucoma due to a rare condition called Essential Iris Atrophy. In 2017, after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, Marie’s cornea tore due to stress and pollution. She underwent a corneal transplant, but things didn’t work out as planned. Marie’s body rejected the transplant, and she left her job to focus on her health. She faced a second transplant and then, due to further complications, a third, which was successful. Although Marie has lost sight in her right eye, her cornea transplant saved her from needing another procedure. Today, Marie is grateful for the three generous people who donated their organs and tissues to help her and others, and feels they give her strength, resilience, and hope. Dr. Samuel Lee Kountz was a true pioneer in the field of kidney transplantation. In 1961, he performed the first successful kidney transplant between two people who were not identical twins. ?? Less than a decade later, he developed a prototype for a kidney perfusion machine, which is now used as the international standard for equipment in hospitals and research labs.??
