? Mother's Day Luncheon Honoree ? Annise Parker served the people of Houston with three terms each as City Council member, City Controller, and Mayor. She is the only person in Houston’s history to have held all three offices. She was the first openly LGBTQ mayor of a major American city. Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010. Singular honors include Scenic Houston Scenic Visionary Award, Holocaust Museum Houston Guardian of the Human Spirit Award, Galveston Bay Foundation Guardian of the Bay Award, Rice University Distinguished Alumna, and Local Arts Leadership honoree by Americans For the Arts. Parker is past President/CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory Fund and Institute. Previously she was Senior Vice-President and Chief Strategy Officer of BakerRipley. She was a Doerr Institute for New Leaders Fellow and Professor in the Practice at Rice University, and Fellow of the Institute of Politics at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. A second generation native Houstonian and graduate of Rice University, Parker spent 20 years working in the energy industry, including 18 years with Mosbacher Energy Company, before entering public life. She and her wife, Kathy Hubbard, are advocates for adoption, with three daughters and a son—and now 5 grandchildren. Learn more about the Mother's Day Luncheon: https://lnkd.in/gB7caaHB

? Mother's Day Luncheon Honoree ? Called “the Johnny Appleseed of arts nonprofits,” Alecia Lawyer is the Founder, Artistic Director, and Juilliard-trained Oboist of ROCO, Houston’s only 40-piece professional classical music ensemble. On the cutting edge of how classical music is created and experienced, she has championed accessibility in the performing arts field and focused on relationships rather than transactions. ROCO is built as a ‘human-first’ orchestra model that leans into “pay what you wish” tickets and is supported by a vast portfolio of supporters to achieve 98% revenue from donated dollars for their current $2.4 million budget. Seeking the Bachs, Beethovens, and Bonds of our time, ROCO will reach 150 commissioned world premieres from living composers and ROCO's debut album was recognized with a GRAMMY? for Producer of the Year, Blanton Alspaugh. ROCO has performed in over 75 venues, taking Houston on a tour of the city through music. They have livestreamed for free to the world since 2013, reaching all seven continents and are regularly featured nationally on APM’s Performance Today reaching an astounding 364 broadcasts. Building a multi-generational audience, ROCOrooters is a music education/childcare program that runs in tandem with and after concerts. Kids fifth grade and under go to a lesson, have a trip into the concert hall, and then stay for pizza and movies so caregivers can have an evening out. Another of ROCO’s unique and industry-changing initiatives, ROCO on the Go, places QR codes throughout Houston’s parks, hospitals, and schools that link to ROCO’s free music streaming. Alecia was one of Musical America’s Top 30 Influencers in 2015, named a finalist for Texas Musician of the Year (along with Willie Nelson – who won), and one of Houston’s Top 50 Most Influential Women. She has two fabulous sons with her husband, Larry, and loves their weekend Harley rides. Learn more about the Mother's Day Luncheon: https://lnkd.in/gB7caaHB

? Mother's Day Luncheon Honoree ? Born and raised on the US-Mexico border, Ruth learned about economic disparities long before she became a sociologist. One of her early lessons was that economic resources lead to educational opportunities, and educational opportunities lead to economic resources. With help from teachers, a school counselor, and her boyfriend (now husband of 30 years), education was Ruth’s ticket out of poverty. Ruth received her Bachelor’s from Stanford University and Master’s and PhD from Harvard University, then joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, one of the top sociology programs in the nation. Shortly after being promoted with tenure, she came back to Texas to join the faculty at Rice University and has dedicated her career toward informing efforts to remove barriers and create opportunities for everyone. Ruth directs the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, which consists of five research centers that bring together data, research, engagement, and action to improve lives. In 2011, she founded one of those centers, the Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC), a partnership between Rice and ten Houston-area school districts, aiming to improve educational equity by connecting research to policy and practice, which she directed from 2011 to 2022. She also founded the National Network of Education Research-Practice Partnerships (NNERPP), which now connects and supports 78 partnerships between research institutions and education agencies throughout the country. In order to do research as a public good, she has raised over $80M so that partner organizations do not have to pay for research. In 2022, President Biden appointed her to the National Board for Education Sciences, which advises and approves priorities for the research arm of the US Department of Education.
