Our team had a great week at Verticon in Texas! LifeFlight's Director of Aviation Josh Dickson presented at an industry forum on Instrument Flight Rules and Performance-based Navigation - an area in which LifeFlight has partnered with the FAA on a demonstration project. One of LifeFlight's founders, Tom Judge, moderated the panel. LifeFlight prides itself in sharing lessons learned that improve access to healthcare and improve aviation safety. Thank you to Vertical Aviation International for having us! #Verticon #morethanjusthelicopters #LifeFlightofMaine

Last night, LifeFlight of Maine accepted Vertical Aviation International's "Salute to Excellence Safety Award" at VERTICON (formerly HAI HELI-EXPO). The award recognizes LifeFlight’s “exceptional contributions to enhancing safety and safety awareness in vertical aviation operations.” At LifeFlight of Maine, safety is at the core of everything we do and has been since the organization was founded in 1998. A culture of safety permeates LifeFlight’s critical care services across its helicopter, airplane, and ground transport programs. LifeFlight has safely cared for and transported more than 40,000 patients from all corners of the state. This week is #PatientSafetyAwarenessWeek. The Center for Patient Safety chose this year's theme of "Moving the Needle," emphasizing the shift from mere awareness to actionable steps aimed at enhancing the safety of patients and care teams across the world. At LifeFlight of Maine, safety is at the core of everything we do and has been since the organization was founded in 1998. Safety briefings, safety committees, safety trainings, post-incident safety reviews, and uncompromising standards for each discipline were coded into the DNA of LifeFlight of Maine over the years and persist to this day. A culture of safety permeates LifeFlight’s critical care services across its helicopter, airplane, and ground transport programs. LifeFlight has safely cared for and transported more than 40,000 patients from all corners of the state. #SafetyFirst #morethanjusthelicopters

This #WomenInAviationWeek we'd like to introduce you to Veronica Marzonie! In addition to being a flight nurse, Veronica is the Safety Coordinator and the co-chair of LifeFlight’s multidisciplinary safety team. This is her tenth year at LifeFlight. “Aviation captured my attention and imagination when I was a young child. I can remember doing an assignment in maybe the first or second grade about the solar system and dreaming of being an astronaut. I remember pretend play being a pilot, flight crew — any job I’d heard of where you got to fly,” says Veronica. “I may not have become a professional pilot or an astronaut, but I found a place where aviation could be a part of my life.” In addition to caring for some of Maine’s most critically ill and injured patients, Veronica helps to coordinate and implement systems that help keep people in every LifeFlight vehicle safe. “I really enjoy that variety and doing whatever task is needed to improve my crew and the overall organization’s effectiveness,” says Veronica. Veronica’s work doesn’t stop when her shift at LifeFlight ends. She volunteers with ECHO HeliOps, which is an organization dedicated to free and low-cost education, training, and networking for public safety aviation crew. “I am a founding member of their Safety Team, which is specifically focused on sharing safety best practices, training, and resources to aid crew members and the industry in achieving their prime directive; every crew member will return home at the end of each shift. In that role I was part of a group that authored the 'Public Safety Aviation Bill of Rights' which is an outline of ten principles focused on having risk management be a shared responsibility and a fundamental part of the culture in public safety aviation,” says Veronica. Thank you, Veronica, for your commitment to the people of Maine and thank you to every #WomenInAviation for your incredible work!
