"This was the best Life Teen Women's Retreat I've been on. I have heard similar praises from many of the women who attended. The design was simple yet stunning, setting the pace and tone for the rest of the retreat. Each speaker left everything on those stages. The stories of joy, deep grief, resiliency, and God's redemption made someone feel truly and intimately seen each time a speaker bared their heart. There is a great need for dynamic youth ministry, and we have a part to play. We estimate roughly 75% of parishes still need a youth minister. Keeping people engaged with the faith requires relational ministry. Teens especially need youth ministry where a person will walk with them and answer their questions about faith, life, and purpose. It takes a village to raise a family, and Life Teen is a vital part of that village helping families create an environment to lead teens closer to Christ. "Treasure in Heaven" is our phrase to remind us to slow down and re-engage in ongoing dialogue with the Lord: "Lord, everything that you have given me belongs to you. What do you want me to do with all my time, talent, and treasure you have given me?" When you and I meet the Lord at our end, Christ gives the image of the talents and asks, "What did you do with the talents I gave you?" (Matthew 25:14–30). Engaging young Catholics is critical to rebuilding a thriving Church in the U.S., particularly as the number of young people who attend church regularly and who identify as Catholic is shrinking. A 2020 Pew Research study found that just 24% of U.S. teens identify as Catholic, and fewer than half attend Mass weekly. Fully, 47% of U.S. Catholic teens attend Mass “a few times a year or less.” To address this need, Life Teen International recently released its annual “The State of Catholic Youth in America” report, which outlines five levels of engagement that can help leaders develop programming that meets young Catholics where they are and brings them into the life of the Church. The most effective level? Engaging young people by building a strong community and leveraging strong adult mentors to help them build a relationship with God. Structured, effective mentorship to young people is made possible through a parish or faith community that has a strong foundation of co-responsible, leadership, management, and operations, driven by a clear mission. Father Chris Turner was ordained a priest 100 days ago. He was previously a Life Teen Full-Time Missionary, a Youth Minister, the Life Teen Events Director, and the St. Ann's Director of Youth Ministry until entering Mount St. Mary's Seminary in 2017. "What I have discovered in my first 100 days as a priest is that none of my fears have been realized. Instead, I have found that being a priest is even better than I thought it would be." Last month, the Aotearoa Leadership Convention in Wellington, New Zealand, was Life Teen's first training to have a bishop, archbishop, and papal nuncio. Participants from all six dioceses in New Zealand attended. "There is so much hope as it was culturally diverse and so multigenerational," said Randy Raus, Life Teen President and CEO. Also while at the convention, the New Zealand Life Teen Summer Camp was announced and sold out three days later.
