Preparing for the Unexpected: Safeguarding Your Research Science is full of challenges, and while we can’t predict every obstacle, we can prepare for them. Lab pauses—whether due to natural disasters, funding gaps, or unexpected shutdowns—can set research back significantly. A few proactive steps can make all the difference in getting back on track quickly: ?? Preserve key samples – Store modified cell lines, vectors, RNA, and other crucial materials securely. ?? Use reputable repositories – Check for key cell lines in established resources like ATCC. ?? Stock up on freezing media & stabilizers – Regularly freeze down essential reagents. ?? Collaborate for backup storage – Exchange critical reagents, such as edited cell lines, with trusted collaborators in different locations. I saw the impact of these precautions firsthand. Two years after I left my postdoctoral position, the lab I worked in at Baylor College of Medicine experienced severe flooding. The power failed, and everything in refrigerators and freezers—including a large -80°C freezer—was lost. Fortunately, they had shared key reagents with other labs and even distributed some through a biotech company. This forward-thinking approach allowed them to recover much faster than other affected labs. Hopefully, you’ll never need these measures—but being prepared can protect years of hard work. What strategies does your lab use to safeguard research? #ResearchMatters #LabPreparedness #SupportScience #ScienceResilience #STEM #ScientificCommunity

Some of the LSPM team at the Stand Up for Science Rally at UCSD!
Mayah, Michealla, Peach, and I had the privilege of attending the Stand Up for Science Rally at UCSD. We came together to show our support for those impacted by potential science funding cuts and to advocate for the importance of continued investment in research. The organizers did an excellent job putting together an inspiring event with great speakers, an engaged crowd, and even perfect weather. Grateful to be part of a community that values and defends science! #StandUpForScience #ScienceMatters #UCSD

Stand up for Science in San Diego!
Looking for a Stand Up for Science event in San Diego? Here are details on two upcoming gatherings. I’ll be attending the UCSD event and encourage everyone to show up in solidarity—especially for graduate students, postdocs, and early-career scientists. The San Diego March for Science events organized by Mary Canady have always been positive and safe spaces for advocacy. Let’s continue to stand together for science and the future of research. #StandUpForScience #ScienceMatters #Cures #Research #STEM #SupportScientists #Innovation #FutureOfScience #ScienceForAll #ScienceAdvocacy #AcademicSupport #PostdocLife #GradStudentSupport

I've been thinking a lot about ways to better support scientists. During a previous funding challenge, our team made the decision to downsize our booth and reallocate those funds toward travel grants. We recognized the recipients on a poster at our booth, and the response was incredible. Not only did it help more scientists attend, but it also sparked meaningful conversations with visitors. Small changes can make a big impact! #SupportScience #Science2025 #ResearchMatters
