This was such a great event - a lot of promising researchers coming out of the University setting. Great job University of Oklahoma and Luke Pauli
Director of 2025 National Medical Device Make-A-Thon | BMES President | Biomedical Engineering Senior @ OU
The University of Oklahoma hosted the 2025 National Medical Device Make-A-Thon just over a week ago! It was an incredible weekend where we hosted over 130 participants for a total of 27 teams from 14 universities across the country in a 48-hour medical device design competition! As a competitor in 2023 and 2024, I never could have imagined being the Director and hosting this great competition at OU along with our co-host, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign! I am so grateful for the OU Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering and University of Oklahoma – Gallogly College of Engineering for their tremendous support. Thank you to the Head Coordinators, Nathan Stryker Herrera and Brendan O'Rourke and thank you to our incredible faculty advisors Alex Frickenstein and Kirsten Jefferys! A huge thank you to our planning committee of over 20 OU and UIUC students! And lastly, thank you to all of our judges, mentors, sponsors, volunteers, and countless other support for making this event possible! This year's Make-A-Thon was un an unforgettable experience and it was amazing to bring so many bright and talented people to one place for a weekend full of learning and fun! I gained so much knowledge and connected with so many amazing people, both during the planning process and throughout the competition and I could not be more grateful for this incredible opportunity! For competition photos, keep an eye on our Website: https://lnkd.in/gFhb5tiE Instagram: https://lnkd.in/g5sviNSi Lastly, I look forward to choosing the next host and supporting them to make the 2026 Make-A-Thon even better! Problem-Solving, Leadership, and Innovation in Action!? Last week, the 2024 Termeer Fellows came together for an immersive, hands-on session focused on team leadership and problem-solving—an essential skill set for biotech leaders navigating complex challenges. We were joined by Michèle Barnett Berg, PCC, managing director at Envisage Consulting, who led Fellows through exercises in parallel thinking and catalytic questioning, both of which ask participants to use new ways to problem solve and address challenges. Craig Shimasaki, PhD, MBA, CEO of Moleculera Biosciences and Termeer Mentor, guided Fellows through a structured live problem-solving exercise—a process that challenges leaders to reframe their obstacles, uncover hidden insights, and synthesize breakthrough solutions. No quick fixes. No premature advice. Just powerful questions, fresh perspectives, and strategic action planning. With mentorship from industry leaders & Termeer Mentors: Rod Cotton, board member and advisor to the CEO at Molecura Biosciencs, Deborah Dunsire, board member at McKesson, Bart Scheerder, founding team at A3 Lab and Alan Walts, venture partner at Advent Life Sciences. Fellows left the session with not just solutions—but a repeatable framework they can take back to their teams, helping them dissect and strategize around challenges with clarity and confidence. As biotech founders and CEOs, solving complex problems isn’t just part of the job—it’s the job. Investing in leadership development like this ensures that the next generation of healthcare innovators is equipped to increase the probability of bringing life-changing treatments to patients. A huge thank you to our Fellows, Mentors, and the Termeer community for making this an unforgettable session. Onward to more breakthroughs! #leadership #STEM #TermeerFoundation #HealthcareInnovation #RareDisease #Biotech #Bio #Biotechnology #PatientCare #LifeScience #PeopleEmpoweringCures #ConnectionsEmpoweringCures #LeadershipMatters #Healthcare #Mentorship #Mentor #Science #CEO #Founder #TermeerFellows #Leader
