Math anxiety is a significant challenge for many students, with 67 percent of U.S. teachers acknowledging its impact on their classrooms. Nearly one in five U.S. adults also report math anxiety, highlighting the need for effective interventions. At LIFE Male STEAM Academy, a Pittsburgh-based program called PLUS – Personalized Learning Squared – combines live tutors and AI technology to personalize math instruction. This approach not only supports scholars at LMSA but also equips teachers with real-time data to address learning gaps effectively. Robert, a ninth-grader at the academy, experienced remarkable growth in math proficiency through the PLUS program. With his teacher's guidance and the platform's data insights, Robert's math aptitude test score improved by over 200 points in a single school year – a feat described as "phenomenal" in educational circles considering most students advance by about 80 points on the same assessment. Beyond academic progress, Robert's enhanced math skills positively impacted his overall confidence and performance in other subjects. He’d been conducting his own science experiments for about three years by that point, mixing up whatever he could get his hands on at home and waiting to see if the resulting goo would turn into anything. “They were just dish soap, laundry detergent, and common household chemicals,” he says today of the ingredients he’d use. “I would hide them under my bed and see what would happen if I left them overnight. There was a lot of mixing together completely at random.” …These days, a whole lot of people are paying him a whole lot of attention. Last October, the 3M company and Discovery Education selected Heman, a rising 10th-grader at Woodson High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, as the winner of its Young Scientist Challenge.
