The Greek philosopher Aristotle identifies three primary components of persuasion: logos (intellect), pathos (emotion), and ethos (ethics). Within the classical movement, in particular, there’s no short supply of logos. We love intellect. We live in an emotional world, and a desire to be anchored to truth has developed a deeply held belief in the value of information. However, we need to also be cautious that we aren’t discarding two-thirds of Aristotle’s components of persuasion in the spirit of pushing back against emotionalism. Focusing exclusively on intellect risks ignoring the powerful roles that emotions and social influences play in shaping a person’s beliefs. According to an SC Johnson survey, families average 20 hours a week together in the car. That's a lot of time! Rather than cruising in your own worlds, take this as an opportunity to be together and practice discipleship. Music is a great opportunity to share an experience, have a conversation, and analyze budding convictions. Spend some time playing your student’s music in the car. “I know this is one of your favorite songs. Tell me what about it resonates with you?” Or “You and your friends talk about this artist a lot. What draws you to him/her?” You may find that your student can’t quite articulate their reasoning for the affection, but that’s ok, they’re beginning the process. It’s also an opportunity for you to share some of your favorite music and model why it’s meaningful to you.
