One of my first placements at Liberty reached out today:
Hi Boyd,
Been a while!
Sounds like you may remember me as one of your early placements?? Well, let me tell you the story from my perspective on the actual hiring that may give you a good laugh. And, I talk about the process every time I try to sell myself to someone.
When I interviewed with Dow Jones, because of your cold call to me, it was for a 3rd shift, Windows Admin role.
There was back and forth, standard job interview questions. Yadda, yadda. Then, Paul Robinson asked me "if I told you a computer was having a hard drive failure, and it is based on sun solaris, what would you do?"
I not only answered him directly, I knocked it ouf of the park. I didn't make any assumptions and gave him the exact three commands that you would need to replace the failed drive without having to shut down the computer.
He told me that every person he had ever interviewed started with "shut down the computer...". What if it's production? That's no beuno.
Anyway, when I pitch myself to someone in response to "tell me about yourself", that is *ALWAYS* a part of my story. It lets me demonstrate not just my skillsets but my concern for impact to the business in what I do.
So... know that you not only got me in the door in that random cold call, it became part of my story.
PS - for a bonus laugh to share, which I probably didn't tell you at the time... you called to tell me I got job as I was getting pictures taken for my wedding. That made a good day even better.
You probably don't get this level of detail back from people you place. Thought you'd enjoy it.
Thank you!
