AI is an effective tool - just ask cyber criminals. Amazon now claims they can view activity on ~25% of IP addresses on the internet, which truly speaks to the scope of the hyper-scaler CSPs. With this level of visibility, Amazon has been able to witness cyber threats increase from 100 million to 750 million attempts per day during 2024. What have they identified as a likely culprit for the 7x increase? AI, of course! CJ Moses states, “Generative AI has provided access to those who previously didn’t have software-development engineers to do these things.” My Everfox colleague, Aaron M., demonstrated in 2023 how ChatGPT could be manipulated to assist with building a zero-day threat - raising awareness to the power of such tools. Even nation-states are suspected to be leveraging AI to create previously unrealized capabilities. Moses points out, “In the last eight months, we’ve seen nation-state actors that we previously weren’t tracking come onto the scene.” Anticipate seeing more AI-powered security tools coming available and don’t be afraid to implement them into your organization. A recent article out of the NCCI spoke to three challenges in workers' compensation in 2024; physical space, environmental impact and mental health. Environmental impact seems to be a "hot" issue and I'd list as #2 in terms of importance as we log our warmest July in history. Outdoor work on farms, roofs and in confined warehouse with little to no climate control bring obvious exposures not the least of which being heat exhaustion. My associate PJ Hughes recently focused on the biggest historic culprit of lost time in my opinion, mental health. Dr. Jennifer Christian, PHD taught me decades ago that managing the socio-economic aspects of a claim are paramount in reaching amicable and positive resolutions for the claimant. Safety and trust that you are going to be taking care of by your employer has never been so important with all the negativity and paranoia that is around us. Take care of your employees and be sensitive to their state of mind. -Paul
