One of the important points reinforced in the latest DORA report is that internal platforms help accelerate software delivery... unless they don't. The report shares some great detail around benefits for enterprise teams using internal platforms when they are built with their customers in mind. However, when platforms are required to be used regardless of their effectiveness, the overall delivery performance is negatively impacted. From the report: ?? "for respondents who reported, they are required to “exclusively use the platform to perform tasks for the entire app lifecycle, there was a 6% decrease in throughput” I think this is to be expected. When platforms are built without their teams' specific goals in mind they also fail to address their delivery needs. The focus on platform engineering has built momentum around the need to treat our platforms as compelling products and data like that found in the 2024 DORA Report help to reinforce this approach. The biggest takeaway here is platforms should not be built in isolation with an "if you build it, they will come" mindset. The challenge in many organizations is going to be advocating for change from the "DevOps team" building everything in a centralized "one size fits all" approach, to working along side development teams to build platforms that solve real delivery needs. I'd love to discuss these challenges with more folks who are on this journey! If you haven't already, in addition to the DORA Report (https://lnkd.in/gY5Nvyae), check out the CNCF Platforms White Paper (https://lnkd.in/gsp39uvs) for a ton of great info on building modern developer platforms. #PlatformEngineering #DORAReport #CNCF #Platforms #SoftwareDelivery #DevOps

?? We had a great discussion yesterday here at Liatrio about the latest #DORA report. ?? One key topic in the report is Developer Experience and purpose-driven engineering. ?? ?? ?? ?? "A user-centered approach to software development can fundamentally alter how developers view their work. Instead of shipping arbitrary features and guessing whether users might use them, developers can rely on user feedback to help them prioritize what to build. This approach gives developers confidence that the features they are working on have a reason for being. Suddenly, their work has meaning: to ensure people have a superb experience when using their products and services. There’s no longer a disconnect between the software that’s developed and the world in which it lives. Developers can see the direct impact of their work through the software they create." - DORA report pg. 60 ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? Seems like happy developers make happy products, and happy products make happy end users. Good developer experience has a fantastic and necessary ripple effect. What do you think? ?? ?? Just because you don’t trust AI-generated code doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it. Nearly 40% of the 2024 DORA Report respondents have low or no trust in AI-generated code. That is an interesting finding because 75% also continue to use AI for daily development tasks. WHY??? This duality of AI use makes sense if we recognize how developers have worked for the last 20+ years. No professional developer has written code without looking for examples in online forums like StackOverflow. Every code example found through research online needs to be adapted or modified to be useful for your specific code base and use case. The first solution you try is almost never the final “working solution”. Developers have been conditioned to “not trust” the code they find online by default and they are comfortable trying code that doesn’t work as they work through potential better options to solve complex problems. AI-generated code offers developers a more efficient way to find and evaluate potential solutions, regardless of their efficacy. The significant benefits here are more options available that are more closely matched to your implementation as well as an improved workflow with faster iteration through non-working solutions. I think this opinion is reinforced by the data in the DORA report and it shows that AI is becoming an irreplaceable tool for software developers regardless of their level of trust in the technology. What do you think? Do you think we need to “trust” AI to use it every day? --------------- Images below are some excerpts from the 2024 DORA Report from their AI research.
