The Urvashi Vaid National LGBTQ+ Women's Community Survey revealed important findings on LGBTQ+ women’s health and mental health. “22% of LGBTQ+ women have attempted suicide, more than 4 times the rate of the general population, and 66% report seeking treatment for trauma.” Here are the 5 findings: 1. Respondents experience higher rates of anxiety at 44% or depression at 51%, compared to 19% of adults with anxiety and 18% of adults with depression. 2. Black and indigenous women report higher rates of disability and attempted suicide. 3. Half of LGBTQ+ women do not have a primary care physician. 4. Black and indigenous women were twice as likely to lack access to quality care. 5. Respondents said cost and discrimination were the leading reasons they did not seek medical care when in need. LGBT Center’s post-election town hall outlines quest to ‘Trump-proof’ New York” via Gay City News, Matt Tracy: “The 'Voices Beyond the Vote' town hall event came barely one week after America voted to send Donald Trump back to the White House with a GOP trifecta. The election results prompted widespread concern among community members after many Republican politicians, led by the president-elect, spent the campaign season voicing anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and vowing to roll back the rights of transgender individuals in areas like sports, healthcare, and education.” “‘The results of last week’s election left many of us with a mix of grief, uncertainty, and fear,’ Dr. Carla Smith, Ed.D., the executive director of the The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, said during an opening address to the audience. ‘But even in this moment, I want to assure each of you that The Center is here… I want to remind everyone that we do not and cannot achieve our mission alone. As the first lesbian of color to lead the center in its 41-year history, I know how important collaboration and unity are to achieving our goals.’” “The event represented the latest example of the LGBT Center’s longstanding role as a queer community hub in critical moments— including bill-signing ceremonies and community organizing meetings. The town hall featured several state lawmakers who delivered remarks about the election and outlined their goals to ‘Trump-proof’ New York.” “The elected officials stressed that the public must not abandon the LGBTQ community due to the election results after Trump repeatedly ran blatantly transphobic advertisements mocking non-binary individuals, trans Americans, and drag artists, among others. ‘We didn’t lose the election because of trans kids,’ [Manhattan Assemblymember Tony] Simone said.” If you are seeking support, visit gaycenter.org/support to find resources such as counseling and social groups. ??? Trans Visibility = Advocacy ??????? It was an honor to give remarks at the first-ever TGNCNB Job Fair presented by the New York State Department of Labor and hosted at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. The TGNCNB community, much like some* other communities, faces unprecedented workplace harassment and we must continue to cultivate spaces for us to be on an equal playing field with our cis counterparts. Thank you to the Osborne Association for inviting me back as a featured speaker at the annual TDOR event. As I continue to honor the lives that we have lost, my heart goes out to the lives that we will lose given our political climate. — I leave you all with three takeaways: 1) Advocacy is a spectrum. Not everyone is going to be the next Marsha P. Johnson but we all have the ability to make change— both small and large. 2) Visibility = Advocacy. The reality is that our very existence is a form of resistance so walk with power and eloquence and they will never win. 3) I do not believe in toxic positivity and I wholeheartedly acknowledge that the world sucks right now and will for a very long time. Embrace love and fight for hippiness with all you have. Blessings ??????
