"Accuracy is a very important part of ethics." In our latest episode of The Native Experience, we discuss just how much every word can shape outcomes. Joining us is Carl Gene Fordham, National President of the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT). Carl sheds light on the ethical responsibility of delivering complete and unbiased translations, especially in legal contexts where selective interpretation can deny non-native English speakers access to justice. We also chat about the complexities of forensic translation, the growing influence of AI, and the challenges of ensuring every voice is heard—and heard accurately—in the courtroom. “With forensic translation … we have to account for every possible meaning or interpretation” This week on The Native Experience podcast, Carl Gene Fordham shares the challenges of forensic translation. As opposed to localization that transforms a text to fit a meaning, forensic translation must account for every possible meaning and interpretation. As the national President of the The Australian Institute of Translators and Interpreters, Carl has a unique perspective on the precision required in legal translation, especially when supporting Mandarin-speaking individuals in Australia's legal system. Join us as we delve into the intricacies of forensic translation, the role of expert witnesses, and the evolving impact of AI in this fascinating episode.
