Did you know that Lewis Latimer served in the Union Navy during the Civil War? His navy uniform jacket is one of the many fascinating artifacts featured in our new permanent exhibition! Latimer was also a member of the Flushing post of the Grand Army of the Republic—an organization of Union Army and Navy veterans. In photo 2, Latimer (at the far left) can be seen holding up the flag at a veterans event in Flushing, in March 1924.?? –? Growing up as the son of self-emancipated enslaved Virginians, Latimer faced many challenges due to racial discrimination prevalent at the time. He enlisted in the Union Navy in 1864 at the age of 16, fighting for the abolition of slavery, and –with no access to formal education– taught himself mechanical drawing. Eventually, he became a chief draftsman, patent expert, and inventor. Learn more about Latimer’s inspiring life and legacy by visiting the Lewis Latimer House Museum, open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 5pm! #LewisLatimer #NYCMuseums #LewisLatimerHouseMuseum #BlackHistory
