?? New research highlights gender disparities in surgical reimbursement! ?? Gender bias in healthcare doesn’t just impact patient care: It’s built into the way medical procedures are valued and reimbursed. A new study in the Journal of Women’s Health shows that procedures performed on male patients are consistently reimbursed at higher rates than those for female patients, and this gap hasn’t improved in 20 years. ?? Key findings: ?? 30% higher RVUs → Procedures on male patients are assigned higher relative value units (RVUs) compared to those on female patients. ?? $75.73 more reimbursement → Male-specific procedures are reimbursed with more money than female-specific procedures. ?? 20 years → No meaningful improvement in reimbursement disparities. ?? Why does this matter? Relative Value Units (RVUs) determine how much physicians are paid for different procedures. This large-scale study, analyzing 110 gender-specific surgical procedures over two decades, confirms what many have suspected: procedures on female patients are systematically undervalued. #Infertility doesn’t discriminate, but access to care does. Black women are nearly twice as likely to experience infertility as white women - yet they are far less likely to receive treatment. Research shows that while 15% of Black women report infertility, only 8% seek medical help, compared to 15% of white women. The barriers? Systemic bias, financial constraints, medical mistrust, and lack of culturally competent care. How can we change this? ?? Expand #insurance coverage for fertility treatments. ?? Address medical bias through provider education and patient advocacy. ?? Increase Black representation in fertility medicine. ?? Break the stigma through community conversations and #education.
