Key signs you’re not healthy and how to make changes to live longer: Levels Co-Founder Casey Means, MD and Mark Hyman, MD chat about the health issues that are shortening the lives of people in the United States, and what you can do to change the course of your health right now. ???? You have health issues: ? Metabolic dysfunction, a problem of producing and using energy, can be an underlying cause of Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, chronic liver disease, and chronic kidney disease. ? Other issues—including depression, brain fog, infertility, erectile dysfunction, chronic pain—can also reflect a problem with creating and processing energy. ? We can’t fix health without fixing the decisions that we’re making every day: what we’re eating, how we’re sleeping, how we’re stressing, how we’re moving, how we’re supporting our microbiome. ? With 88% of American adults having at least one marker of metabolic dysfunction, this topic is relevant to the majority. ? Wearing a continuous glucose monitor can help you track your glucose responses. “It really comes down to choices,” Dr. Casey Means says. “And right now we don’t have a lot of help to understand what choices to make for our own body. And that’s where wearables—especially bio wearables—can be very helpful.” https://lnkd.in/gT6z2_kT #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar

How a continuous glucose monitor provides a window into one’s health Dr. Sara Gottfried, author of “The Autoimmune Cure,” joined us for an episode of A Whole New Level to talk about lifestyle interventions for health and what helps motivate people to make them. Receiving regular data from a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and other types of devices or tests empowers individuals to make behavioral changes. When you can see on an app that your metabolic health is declining rather than improving, you have the motivation to adjust your diet, activity level, stress level, sleep quality and quantity, and more. In comparison, annual tests at the doctor’s office, while important, don’t provide this regular insight into metabolic health status. They are single-point-in-time measurements impacted by various factors. https://lnkd.in/g6hHWfPq #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar

Why do so many people in the United States have prediabetes? Levels Co-Founder and President Josh Clemente was recently on the Dhru Purohit Show to discuss the metabolic health crisis and rising rates of prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. About 52% of adults in the United States have prediabetes or diabetes. Both conditions are diagnosed based on a person’s blood glucose (blood sugar) metrics, with prediabetes indicating that someone is trending toward Type 2 diabetes and worsening metabolic health. When people have prediabetes, they are already insulin resistant and experiencing mitochondrial dysfunction. Impaired blood sugar control and insulin resistance are root causes of many of the leading causes of death, including Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular events (i.e., stroke and heart attack). Poor diet, a lack of physical activity, and more are all reasons people in the United States are experiencing such high rates of prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Many people aren’t even aware they have prediabetes. And the condition often goes untreated. https://lnkd.in/gx43HFnA #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar

What are the worst foods for metabolism and blood sugar? At Levels, we have data. Here, Levels Co-Founder and author of "Good Energy" Casey Means, MD, shares about the worst foods in the Levels dataset of more than 51 million glucose data points. ?? The worst: Skittles have an average rise in our glucose dataset of 83 mg/dL. And you are likely to crash after that type of spike. ?? Next, it’s cereals: Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms—all lead to about 60 mg/dL rise, or above. ?? Common American breakfast foods (muffins, waffles, pancakes, etc.) are in the worst 100 foods, scoring above a 40 mg/dL spike. ? Looking at our best foods, we also see a handful of breakfast items, including frittata, avocado and egg, avocado and greens, chia pudding, and Greek yogurt and berries. ?? The metabolic disease epidemic: ? 72% of adults in the United States are overweight or have obesity ? 9 out of 10 leading causes of death in the United States are caused by or worsened by dysregulated blood sugar ? 50% of people in the United States go on a diet to lose weight ? There’s an effort-outcome mismatch ?? One of the biggest things we need to do is keep our blood sugar in a stable and healthy range. We have the power to do that. ?? That is where tools like continuous glucose monitoring can empower people to make choices that impact their physiology, turning the tide against weight gain, high blood sugar, and chronic disease. https://lnkd.in/gSK8sg3u #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar

Now available wherever you listen to podcasts. ??? What your post-meal glucose levels can tell you For a recent episode of A Whole New Level, Levels Advisor Robert Lustig, MD, talks about how you can tell whether you are healthy. One metric to follow is your glucose levels in response to a meal. ? We have glucose rises when we eat meals. That’s normal. ? The key is to mitigate the height of the spike and the duration of the spike. A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) tracks your glucose in real-time so you can see how high and how long your glucose stays elevated after eating a specific food. The shape of the curve can serve as a proxy for how well your insulin is working, which is an indicator of your metabolic health status. https://lnkd.in/gVJGfJ33 #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar

How insulin can be helpful or harmful Levels Advisor Robert Lustig, MD, describes the functions of insulin and why they matter. The beneficial role of insulin ? Insulin clears glucose from the bloodstream. ? If glucose sticks around in the bloodstream, it causes blood vessel dysfunction and can lead to cardiovascular problems. ? Insulin clears glucose before it can cause damage. The harmful role of insulin ? Insulin can also cause damage. ? It causes growth of the coronary arteries, the vascular smooth muscle of the heart, the rest of the vascular system, glandular tissue, and more. ? The growth of these tissues increases the risk of cancer, clotting, and degeneration. ? This is why keeping insulin down as much as possible is a good goal. https://lnkd.in/g39jZqgT #metabolichealth #metabolism #CGM #levelshealth #healthtips #healthy #healthylife #bloodsugar
