South Africa Reverses Course on Hemp and Cannabis Food Ban, Calls for Industry Consultation In a significant policy shift, the South African government has withdrawn its recently announced ban on foodstuffs containing hemp and cannabis, following strong opposition from industry stakeholders. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for broader consultation to develop regulations that balance public health concerns with the economic potential of the hemp and cannabis sectors. The now-withdrawn regulations, introduced under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics, and Disinfectants Act, sought to prohibit the sale, importation, and manufacture of food products containing hemp and cannabis. Minister of Health Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi cited concerns over unregulated imported products and their potential impact, particularly on minors. However, following discussions with industry representatives, the government has opted for a more collaborative approach, pledging to work closely with stakeholders to draft science-based regulations. India’s first-of-its-kind hemp-lime insulated audio-visual room is now a reality. Located in the basement of a high-rise, the space suffered from severe echo issues, making even phone conversations difficult. With a gym and other common areas nearby, external noise was also a challenge. Team Arete from Kolkata, after attending a two-day hemp-lime workshop, executed this project using only eco-friendly materials, avoiding non-biodegradable options like glass wool, XPS, PU, and EPS. A 2-inch thick hemp-lime mix was cast within a wooden framework, providing both insulation and aesthetics. The result is a naturally beautiful space with enhanced sound quality and zero noise interference—something no conventional material could achieve. A perfect blend of performance and sustainability. We congratulate team Arete for this amazing work which will be a launchpad for utilisation of hemp as an acoustic insulation in India.
