When Adults Step back, Kids Step Up.

关于我们

At Let Grow, we believe in kids. We believe they are smart, strong and at least as capable as we were at their age. So why does society insist on bubble-wrapping them? Why are we encouraged to monitor them constantly, in person or with an app, from the day they’re born to the day they leave for college? Why don’t we trust them to do anything safely or successfully on their own? Because of the twin fears stalking modern day parents: Either our kids will be kidnapped and murdered…or they won’t get into Harvard. But in fact, treating today’s kids as remarkably vulnerable is bad for their future, and ours. With a wild and robotic economy coming our way, kids need to be flexible, creative problem solvers. They can’t solve their problems if an adult is always there, solving them first. The winners of tomorrow are comfortable with risk, able to deal with disappointment (even the lack of a trophy), and they do not consider themselves fragile. At Let Grow, we trust kids to screw up, figure things out, screw up some more, and to make their way in the world as every generation has done until now. It is insulting to act as if somehow this particular generation needs more hand-holding, censorship, and coddling than we did. As adults, our job is to prepare our child for the path and then…let go. And Let Grow.

Last week, we had the wonderful opportunity to welcome Free-Range Kids author and Let Grow movement founder, Lenore Skenazy, to SIA! She spent time with our students, joined us at recess, and saw firsthand how our school is embracing the Let Grow Project to foster independence and resilience. Lenore was also impressed by the creativity and confidence she saw in our students! In the evening, she delivered a fantastic talk to parents and faculty. Using her knowledge and humor, she challenged us to rethink what kids are capable of when given the freedom to grow. We laughed, learned, and left inspired to continue building a community that fosters independence in our children and students. Thank you, Lenore, for wonderful visit- we hope to see you again soon! Missed Lenore's visit? No problem! Listen to S.I.A.: The Podcast-Episode 18 which features Lenore Skenazy and some wonderful insight on the Let Grow project! ??https://lnkd.in/dAa3D_ja

?? Inside Out 2 shows kids what anxiety looks like. In parents, anxiety looks different. Here's one dad's story. His OCD transformed normal parenting anxieties into overwhelming fears. The kicker? Our culture's "Child Safety Industrial Complex" – with its constant fearmongering – isn't helping. It's basically selling OCD-lite to all parents. The solution isn't more safety gear or warnings. It's exposure therapy: letting our kids (and ourselves) experience the world. Because real life is the best antidote to irrational fear. ?? Parents, let's talk about stepping back. When we hover over every moment of our kids' lives, we show love - but we miss something crucial. We don't show trust. And we might never discover just how capable our little ones can be. Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give our children isn't our constant presence - our confidence in their abilities. Let them explore. Let them try. Let them fail. And most importantly, let them surprise you. ? #ParentingTips #ChildDevelopment #ParentingWisdom #LetGrow

We overprotect kids in the real world and underprotect them online. The arrest of a mom in Georgia because her 10-year-old son took a walk should be a wake-up call for America. One lesson should be: parents, go as a group to your local police department and ask them to work with you, to support you as parents and not arrest you. The other lesson is that only 6 states in the US have laws that protect childhood independence (Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Illinois & Virginia). If you're not in one of these 6 states, you can push for your state to pass a "reasonable childhood independence law." See links in comments from Let Grow. In #TheAnxiousGeneration I talk at length about the need for free play & independence in real life. We *must* let kids do things on their own. Walking down the street at 10 years old is the most normal and one of the healthiest things a boy, or a girl, can do, in the vast majority of neighborhoods, especially if they walk, or play, or bike, or run, together with other kids. My son was missing for 15 minutes at a hotel waterpark, and you know what? He did EXACTLY what we taught him! ?? When we got separated (elevator vs. stairs mixup), our 8-year-old: ? Went to our usual meeting spot ? Stayed in safe, public areas ? Asked a lifeguard for help Yes, those 15 minutes were terrifying. But they also showed us our "free-range" parenting is working. Kids CAN handle independence - these small challenges help them grow! ?? The hardest part? Managing our own parental fears without letting them limit our kids' growth. Remember: A scary moment for us doesn't mean we're doing anything wrong. Who else has had a heart-stopping moment that turned out to be a proud parenting win? ?? See how our community responded to this mom’s story ?? https://ow.ly/tR5g50U9GjU #ParentingWins #RaisingIndependentKids #ParentingTips #ChildIndependence
