Can we Minimize Plagiarism in the Era of AI: Strategies for Teachers? On Let's Talk Ed this week, Zahi Atallah invites Kirby Lund to a discussion about the impact of plagiarism in higher education, the reasons behind it, and how teachers could safeguard against it, especially in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Plagiarism is possibly was old as education. But, how pervasive is it? What encourages it? And can we as educators do something about it? In the first segment, we explore the motivations behind academic misconduct. We propose factors influencing students' choice of plagiarism in academic settings. Is it all on the students? Do we, educators, have a hand in it? Do cultural differences have anything to do with this phenomenon? Do high stakes exams and assignments incentivize plagiarism? Is it always the students’ faulty decision-making, or do life challenges play a role in the decision to plagiarize? Subsequently, we explore the ever-evolving landscape of education, especially with the advent of the age of artificial intelligence, which follows the age of the search engines. We take our conversation to the intersection of technology and academic integrity. Kirby and I analyze how AI is shaping the dynamic nature of plagiarism and its impact on education.? In the final segment, we attempt to provide practical strategies to navigate the educational challenges presented by AI. We do not believe that students are always going to plagiarize, and are not guilty because they are students. Moreover, we believe that online and remote instruction does not necessarily equate with cheating. We propose innovative approaches to foster a culture of a student’s ownership of the education, while incentivizing originality and fostering academic honesty in education. Join our discussion on the topic of plagiarism in the age of AI. On Let’s Talk Ed, we go beyond the surface. We offer a deep dive into the complex relationship between students, educators, and learning. We also, would love to hear your opinions on our topics and conversations.
