I was thrilled to join leading U.S. researchers, professional learning providers, and districts this week in Washington, D.C., at the RPPL (Research Partnership for Professional Learning) Convening where LessonLoop was invited to attend and present on AI in Professional Learning with Dr. Jing Liu, Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland. RPPL is a collective of PL practitioners, researchers, educators, and funders committed to advancing educational equity for every student, including students who are Black, Latine, Indigenous, AAPI, Multilingual Learners, students with disabilities, and students experiencing poverty. Together, they study teacher and educator learning to identify, share, and enact PL that improves teachers’ instructional practices and students’ classroom experiences, well-being, and academic growth. Convening Overview, Attendees, and Materials: Their Executive Director, Dr. Stacey Alicea kicked off the meeting with an overview presentation of RPPL’s Learning Agenda and attendees. Attendees? included capable, prestigious, and large research and professional learning organizations in the U.S., as shown in the picture presented by Brendon Krall, MPP, RPPL Research Project Manager. District partners included Boston Public Schools who have a Lesson Study PL model and Baltimore City Public Schools with a data-driven PL model, both of whom I also saw present at the Carnegie Summit in April 2024 on their impressive school improvement science approaches to PL. Key Takeaways: - The importance of teacher and student voice to inform effective professional learning (PL) - Research that looks forward, as well as backwards - Recent and leading studies on the effective PL and high leverage practices for English Language Arts, Math, multilingual learners, competency-based learning, AI in PL, and teacher well-being - AI trends in professional learning, such as presented by Sarah Johnson CEO of the Teaching Lab seeking interest to create K-12 industry benchmark metrics to assess the quality of AI LLMs for specific educator use cases. If you’d like to learn more about the conference or our presentation on AI in Professional Learning, feel free to schedule time with me.

I had the honor of both attending and presenting at EdTech Week in NYC last week where AI topics continue to draw large crowds of educators, administrators, non-profits, EdTech vendors, and investors. ? A few key take-aways: - According the Learn Platform, the average school district used 2,739 technology tools/applications in SY23-24 - There are 9,000 verified EdTech applications - We don’t yet know which ones work best ? Top teacher goals for AI use: - Personalization - Efficiency - Creativity (and problem-solving) - Student agency and ownership ? Below are a few summary items from my talk with Steve Osborn and Michael Hobin of the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) and Phil Dunn on a project to develop AI guidance for their charter schools and local education agencies. Team member Ryan R. Goble Ed.D. was missed! ? Key findings from surveying more than 1,300 educators, students, and parent/families: ? - Kids are using AI more than the adults, and we need to act quickly to catch up. - If RIDE was approaching AI integration like a sport, they are pursuing a balanced approach between offense and defense— realizing the promise of AI to supplement not supplant learning, and mitigating risks related to data privacy #AI, #studentvoice, #student engagement, #professionallearning, #educators Check-out these three best practice AI use case policies: - ? Greenwich Public Schools (comprehensive and well-balanced) - ? North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s AI Acceptable Use Scale (great overall approach) - ? Make sure your district’s AI use is developmentally appropriate with guidelines from this chart ? If you’d like to learn more about this project, or how to use LessonLoop, our AI-powered professional learning platform that helps educators more efficiently personalize instruction with real time student voice data, please reach out to me anytime.

Awesome day two of Ulster BOCES Deeper Learning NY conference! Nona Ullman and I presented on 'The power of student voice' and we had deep discussions on how to engage leaders in using student voice in their Strategic Planning. To top it all off, our closing Keynote speaker, Hannah Gallivan, a disability student rights advocate, spoke about the importance of how we need to better design our buildings, our curriculum and our accessibility for ALL students from ALL subgroups to be able to have high quality learning! She nailed it and it was inspiring to see leaders from across the county and country engaged in discussions that were deeply meaningful and connected to what is near and dear to my heart. When I began my work as an educator, I worked to support students with autism , helping them to better access learning through music therapy. After 4years, I went on to support students as the Director of Student Services at the Woodstock Day school for many years, and then as a district administrator coordinator of special education at the Woodstock Day School and then as a Coordinator of Special Education at the New Paltz CSD, to my current role as Supervisor of Instructional Services, where I oversee our diverse learners co-service. Part of a shift that I have made with this co-service is in the language and practices. It used to be called the behavior support team until I changed it to the preventative action team, focusing on proactive restorative practices. This shifted the narrative from being punitive, to being one of a supportive, proactive practice!
