关于我们
Outstanding Renewal Enterprise, Inc. (The Lower East Side Ecology Center) was founded in 1987 as one of the first organizations to offer community-based recycling and composting programs in New York City. We started our programs by providing innovative recycling drop-off centers. Today, the Ecology Center offers free public compost collection and education, electronic waste recycling, stewardship of public open space, and environmental education. Our programs focus on offering opportunities for all New Yorkers to learn about environmental issues facing NYC and to take responsibility for solving those problems.

?? Last Thursday, we had an inspiring evening at the Lower East Side Girls Club for our Artist Talk: Community Care—Stewarding Your Neighborhood! ???? The discussion explored what it truly means to steward in your community. Featuring the powerful voices of Felicia Young, Christian Bachez, Emma Camell, Emma Turner, Susie Oh, and Pauline Galian, the event brought together local artists and environmental stewards to share ideas, spark creativity, and reflect on our roles in caring for our neighborhoods. Thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their stories, and contributed to this vibrant dialogue. And, of course, a big shoutout to @lmcc_nyc and @girlsclubny for their support!

Plastic is everywhere - in every living being and our oceans and our soil - we need to get serious about limiting the amount of plastic that is produced.
???? #DIDYOUKNOW Plastic production is projected to *double* in the next decade? This is a big threat to climate goals and also disproportionately impacts low-income communities and communities of color. Here’s why: ? Petrochemical facilities release cancer-causing chemicals that pollute our communities ? Plastics are going to become the largest driver of oil and gas demand by 2050 ? The plastic industry could potentially emit more greenhouse gases than coal plants by 2030 ? The harmful impacts throughout the plastic lifecycle, from extraction to disposal are HUGE Good news? There are solutions! Here are a few ways better policy can help: ? Establish stricter rules for petrochemical plants ?Set nationwide targets to reduce single-use plastics ? Focus on reusable and refillable systems that also address socioeconomic barriers ? Reject false solutions like plastic-to-fuel conversion The plastic pollution crisis is an urgent threat to public and environmental health, with communities near plastics facilities often suffering from exposure to harmful pollutants and increased long-term health complications. Advancing equitable policy is a crucial part of achieving environmental justice and a more sustainable future by addressing the root causes of plastic pollution. Want to help right away?
