We have developed the world's smallest radiation resistant Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier for use in CubeSat Laser Communication Terminals. Leontios Stampoulidis will be at SPIE Photonics West (https://lnkd.in/dPKVB2F) on January 28, to present how we made an EDFA in the size of a matchbox (42x30x15 mm) and the mass of an AA battery (~30 grams). This work is a collaboration with NCSR "DEMOKRITOS". Work is supported by the European Space Agency - ESA through Contract 4000140681. ???LEO Space Photonics R&D will lead "SpaceLink" - the new Horizon Europe project on satellite optical communications which has been awarded with the STEP Seal by the European Commission. SpaceLink [European Space-grade Optical Transceivers for high speed intra-satellite interconnects and free space lasercom links] was submitted in the Topic?HORIZON-CL4-2024-SPACE-01-73 [Space technologies for European non-dependence and competitiveness]. The project will receive a ~3Meuro funding and will kick-off on March 1st, 2025. As part of the #EUSpaceResearch call 2024, SpaceLink was one of the six projects selected by the European Commission to receive the STEP seal which aims to promote high-quality EU projects in strategic technologies and help them attract additional public and private funding. LEO Space Photonics R&D will coordinate SpaceLink and will develop optical transceivers at TRL 7 in collaboration with Thales Alenia Space IHP Taipro Engineering S.A.
